Daily Inspiration: Meet JonFlëtch

Today we’d like to introduce you to JonFlëtch.

Hi JonFlëtch, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started out in my senior year of high school making beats at a Boys & Girls club in San Pedro. I was introduced to a program called, “FL Studio” and have been making songs through that program and uploaded them to YouTube. A few years later, I bought my first microphone and started rapping just to practice my vocal mixing until some folks overheard my stuff and told me that I should perform. From then on, I started doing shows, features and production for other artists ever since.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nah, not really. When I started, I was really working with my limitations. Before I had no laptop to make beats with, I had to make them through a USB using the library computers or while in the computer labs on campus. Then years after getting one but at this moment, I had no car so booking shows for myself was difficult on top of keeping a job because it was hard to get to places via MTA. Artist wise, the experience was even half and half because of the traditional rap sound that I had, I was being written off as those “BRING HIP HOP BACK” type rappers all because I rapped well over soul beats that folks swore was going out of style. (It didn’t lol)

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a recording artist/producer. I have made full albums out of my bedroom plus have performed at many shows out of state, have started doing convention performances this year. Recently went viral for making a Kidz Bop parody of Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” last summer which hit 4.5 million views. What sets me apart from others is that I’m a pretty nice composer who pays attention to detail even if it takes months to figure out how to perfectly execute the ideas. Also people say I have a funny personality that goes along with my music.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Back when 2dopeboyz blog was an active page, I used to get inspirations from what projects and songs that landed on there just to keep up with the next big move as an artist. Other than that, the support of my family, close friends and colleagues keep me going.
