Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmela Carr.
Hi Carmela, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
When I was growing up, I discovered a lot of music because of the music my dad would play on our home stereo. We listened to everything ranging from Jughead to Midnight Oil to P!nk to Chester French to Tom Jones and so much more.
I was always amazed at the diversity of the music I heard and I wondered how it was possible for one person to listen to so much music that was so different from each other. As I got older, I learned that it’s what happens when someone is open minded about what they listen to.
Since I was in that environment and exposed to that mindset, I became the same way. My open minded led me to discover so many artists just because I want to give an artist a chance rather than pass an opinion without listening to it.
After I discovered artists like City Boy and Nantucket, I realized that none of my friends were talking about these artists and I thought an awesome way to share their music with people would be to write about how I discovered them and start promoting the music I love.
6 years ago I started Generation Clash and we are still going. Writing articles and curating playlists and encouraging people to listen to music from all genres.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d love to sit here and tell you that it’s been easy, but it hasn’t been.
One of my biggest struggles was having to go on hiatus multiple times because I was trying to balance going to college and having a music industry career which I don’t recommend. Finish school and keep writing in between and share your writing when you have more time. Trying to do it all leads to burnout and then you don’t want to do anything.
I’ve had people I consider to be friends steal my ideas instead of giving me credit. All I do is give people credit and share how I discover what I listen to. You’re not superior for saying that you discovered everything you listen to…the great thing about music is that other people can help you to discover new music.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Generation Clash is a media outlet that aims to share music with people. Older and newer music from all genres. All eras.
I help promote people’s music, but I also run an independent graphic design firm where I help independent artists with album cover design and liner notes.
I try to help as many people as I can. I’m proud that I can offer my services and help people.
My services are priced reasonably and I’m happy to work with people to get an outcome that we are both happy with.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I think that you make your own luck…I think that it’s like karma. If you do good, good comes back to you. If you do bad, bad will come back to you.
I try to be honest with people and not expect much because it’s when we create expectations that results in disappointment. The way to look at it is to see who you’re working with show you what you’re worth to them. People’s true colors quickly show.
I reach out to people and tell them I’m happy to help. No pressure but I’m here if they want to work with me and if we aren’t able to work together, I can refer them to someone who can help.
