Hidden Gems: Meet Wynter Shetley of Wynt’s Wonderland Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wynter Shetley

Hi Wynter, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve had an interest in photography probably since I was 13 years old. I had a childhood friend that had a camera and it kind of caught my eye, making me want to try it out. So then I begged my parents for one, and it started with this super cheap camera they gifted me for Christmas, but then I begged for a better camera a couple years after that. That became my beginner camera, a fujifilm. During that time I started taking photography classes in high school. It was really cool, they still had a class there that would teach us about film development. So throughout high school was where I would instantly take my camera on the go, no matter where it was. Sometimes I was the girl that had her camera with her at parties, shamelessly taking random pics of everyone in the moment just having fun. I became obsessed with capturing moments that you could relive just by looking at the picture. Fast forward to when I was about 22 I moved to Alaska and saved up some money to buy a more professional camera. Of course any day I had off, I would explore as much as I could being more interested in landscape photography because of Alaska’s beauty. When I moved back a year and a half later, that’s when I was more serious about making it a career. I had no idea what I was doing but I just remembered that the more I shoot, the better I must get. It was an on and off relationship with myself as I gave up a couple of times due to comparison and the fear of never being good enough. 2020 was my first big year of booking my first wedding on my own, but then my fear of not being good enough kicked in again after the client’s brief and subtle reaction to the photos. So I took a year off to focus on myself and I feel like that’s exactly what I needed, because I’m back and more motivated than ever before!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has been a bumpy road to get where I am today and I expect it to have its challenges in the future, but I love a good challenge! I feel like my main struggles are staying motivated around slow seasons, and keeping my chin up when clients don’t give me that big reaction that I was hoping for. Sometimes, people just don’t show excitement and that’s okay. Another one, which I feel like a lot of creators and photographers can agree with, is having that comparison mentality sneak up on you. All you can do when that happens is just remind yourself that there will never be another you, and what you create is unique.

We’ve been impressed with Wynt’s Wonderland Photography , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Wynt’s Wonderland is surfaced off of my love for nature and exploring, it’s also a play on words with my own name, it just kind of stuck for me. It all started with landscape prints that I was selling and then it branched into portraits, and weddings. I’m still finding a comfortable niche but I think my favorite topic to photograph are couples. I love capturing the essence of love and romance! Chemistry is so real, and without love what would this world be? Although this industry has become super saturated in the last few years, I would think that I have my own balance between professionalism and being real with people in hopes that I make an impact with my client’s experience. The services I offer include engagement sessions, family sessions, and weddings.

Any big plans?
My goal is to book more weddings and especially destination weddings! What better experience to explore new places while capturing someone’s special day! A true honor and privilege that would be. Hopefully, within the next two years I plan on being full time. That’s when I’ll know I’ve truly made it, and will continue to push myself to be an aspiring photographer to other artists alike.
