Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiyu “Cathy” Zhao
Hi Shiyu “Cathy”, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I discovered my passion for film editing in high school, but with limited opportunities to learn formally, I took the initiative to teach myself. Film has always been more than just an art to me—it is a medium that provides comfort, allows for self-expression, and offers a deeper understanding of experiences. As I continued exploring storytelling, I realized that film is not only a form of artistic expression but also a powerful tool for social awareness. It has the ability to bring attention to important issues, amplify underrepresented voices, and create meaningful conversations that can inspire change.
Through years of learning and working on different sets, I am still developing about how to create a compelling story, improving my ability to shape narratives, control pacing, and evoke emotions through editing. Working on various projects has also deepened my appreciation for the collaborative nature of filmmaking, where editing plays a crucial role in shaping the final vision. Beyond the technical aspects, I see editing as a way to guide the audience’s emotional journey, ensuring that each moment serves the larger purpose of the story.
I am still working hard to learn more from the people and resources around me, whether through hands-on experience, collaboration with other filmmakers, or studying different storytelling techniques. Each project presents new challenges, but it also offers opportunities to refine my craft, explore new perspectives, and push creative boundaries. I am committed to continuously growing as an editor, ensuring that every story I help shape resonates with audiences on a deeper level.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first started working on sets, I encountered individuals who were not always open to sharing their knowledge or providing learning opportunities. Some carried themselves with a sense of exclusivity, making it difficult for newcomers like me to engage and grow. Rather than fostering a collaborative environment, there were moments when I had to prove myself as a newcomer. These experiences were challenging, but they also pushed me to be more observant, proactive, and resourceful in my learning.
Over time, I sought out opportunities where I could grow and connected with professionals who were generous with their knowledge and support. Through persistence and hands-on experience, I continued refining my skills and building confidence in my craft. Looking back, I am grateful for both the challenges and the moments of encouragement that have shaped my journey. Each experience has reinforced my passion for editing and storytelling, and I continue to embrace every opportunity to learn and evolve.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a filmmaker with a passion for storytelling and shaping narratives. My goal is to create emotionally resonant stories by carefully playing with pacing, rhythm, and visual continuity. While my current focus is on editing, I see it as much more than assembling footage—it’s about guiding the audience’s emotions, revealing character depth, and ensuring that every moment serves the larger story.
I wouldn’t say I’m “known” for anything just yet, as I still see myself as a learner. However, I strive to bring a strong sense of sensitivity and emotional awareness to my work, always considering how each cut influences the overall feel and intention of a scene.
What sets me apart is my curiosity and willingness to grow. I embrace challenges—whether it’s working with complex footage, adapting to different creative visions, or continuously refining my storytelling instincts. Every project is an opportunity to learn, and I’m always seeking ways to push myself creatively. More than anything, I want my work to leave a lasting impression—not just to tell a story, but to make people feel something real.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I believe collaboration works best in an open and supportive environment. I see myself as someone who is always learning and growing, and I truly appreciate working with people who are patient, open-minded, and bring a positive, relaxed energy to the process. At the same time, I value professionalism—mutual respect, clear communication, and a strong work ethic are essential to creating a productive and creative space. I know I still have a lot to learn, so I deeply appreciate those who are willing to share their insights and work together toward a common vision. Whether it’s through direct collaboration, exchanging ideas, or simply fostering a supportive atmosphere, I’m grateful for any opportunity to create and learn alongside others.
