Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzy Baker
Suzy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Suzy Baker and my company is Suzys Eye Candy. I started collecting quality vintage fashion over 40 years ago. The thought of these beautiful (often the only one of their kind) pieces being destroyed or going to landfill appalled me! Once they are gone – they are gone forever. I made it my mission to preserve as many pieces as I could. Over time – I have amassed a huge collection of vintage fashion. I repair and research as well as preserve. I have used my extensive collections to style both myself and friends. When asked where their look came from – they would say “Suzy’s Closet” – so Suzys Eye Candy/Suzy’s Closet came to be named.
My wardrobe is almost completely 100% sustainable vintage from all eras. I specialize in Vintage Glamour and Red Carpet Gala looks. I however can create any look or aesthetic at upon request, suitable for any occasion. Over time – many people have told me that I should pursue my love of vintage and my talent in styling by creating a business styling sustainable runway inspired looks using vintage for the modern woman. The decision to start my business was planted seriously by Delayne Dixon – the most amazing fashion designer, a woman whom I admire very much. Her mentoring and support made me realize I could and should proceed. I did extensive market research and realized that there is a huge market for what I do globally. I have the support of many businesses who have reached out to me and who want to collaborate with me. The list of clients who want to hire me has also grown. I have just recently started my journey on making this a reality.
I have an incredible amount of support from a wide variety of people and companies and media who are offering to help this become a reality.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest obstacle and struggle has been space for my collections. I have fashion from all eras and in all categories including an extensive jewelry collection. Currently the collections are stored in multiple storage lockers and locations and are not centralized. Finding a specific piece to complete a look can be a nightmare. Literally like looking for a needle in a haystack. With the help of the business community- I am currently looking for a large space to create an opulent and luxurious space for my clients to be styled and to hold my collections. I will provide all services – including photography and glam squad on site – while providing white glove rock star quality service and pampering details. I will create a sustainable decadent fashion experience.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Suzys Eye Candy specializes in providing inspired vintage sustainable looks for all the important events in my clients lives. My clients come to me when they wish to have a stress free decadent and opulent styling experience before their big event. Complete services are provided – including – in future – chauffeur driven vintage vehicles to transport them to their event in style. We also capture the finalized look with professional photography.
My clients have the option of renting their looks or purchasing. Many of my clients are intimidated by shopping – styling – and storing these sometimes elaborate confections that they may only wear once. Not to mention the expense involved. I remove all anxiety from this process. My client is catered to and pampered during the entire experience. We consult closely with them and make sure they are 100% satisfied. Literally nothing is too much trouble! I have experience styling for gala events and multi model photoshoots. I also style Vintage Bridal and Prom. I have a large team of fashion related artists available to me to provide anything the client desires. I work with an incredible photographer- Nikki Summer – whose photography you see in this article. I owe a great deal of my success to this young woman. I also am fortunate to work with an up and coming model Cambria Osborne. She is both my muse and the face of my brand as well as being a consummate professional To date – I have 100% satisfaction from my clients. I hope in future to work with production/movie companies and theatre.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I see sustainable – reloved vintage fashion as the FUTURE of fashion. People sometimes ask why they should incorporate vintage – apart from the sustainability issue – my answer is WHY NOT! It is always an original look – no one else looks like my client! I have lectured – teaching and promoting the unique and often rare value of vintage while running an almost 100% sustainable business practice. My ultimate goal is to promote understanding and value of vintage fashion. I believe creating the experience is as important as the styling. My clients will also know that a portion of all profits will go to support the Royal Inland Hospital Foundation. RIH Foundation provides medical equipment and services to better support our community. I also actively promote and support the creatives in our community providing them with opportunities that they may not be able to afford or acquire otherwise. My Beauty does good!
