Meet Taro Wayama of Boyle Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taro Wayama

Taro, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Japan but spent my youth in Los Angeles, where I first picked up the guitar after moving to the U.S. My passion for music led me to study classical guitar at USC, where I honed my skills as a performer. After graduating, I worked as a freelance guitarist, exploring a wide range of musical styles. In my late 20s, I began composing, which opened new creative avenues for me. My work in film scoring earned me several awards and a residency in Guadalajara, Mexico. Today, I balance my time between teaching music at a community college, composing, and performing as a guitarist.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In my early 30s, I nearly stepped away from music to pursue a career as a school teacher. However, during this time, I discovered composing, which opened new opportunities and ultimately led me to where I am today.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a classical guitarist, composer, and educator specializing in performance and composition for solo guitar, chamber ensembles, film, and multimedia collaborations. My work blends classical techniques with contemporary influences, often incorporating minimalist and meditative elements. I have been recognized internationally, with awards for film scoring, selections at major festivals, and performances in interdisciplinary projects across Mexico, Japan, China, and Europe. My compositions, published and performed worldwide, range from solo guitar pieces to film scores and site-specific works for installations.

One of my proudest achievements is the breadth of my musical output and its impact across different artistic disciplines. While I have won international guitar competitions and received accolades for my compositions, what I value most is the ability to create meaningful work that resonates with listeners. Whether through a meditative guitar piece, an evocative film score, or a collaborative performance, my goal is always to tell a story and leave a lasting impression.

What sets me apart is my versatility—seamlessly navigating different musical genres and media while staying rooted in my classical foundation. My work is informed by a global perspective, and I strive to bridge traditional and contemporary elements in ways that engage both musicians and audiences. Whether composing for a concert hall, a film, or a visual installation, I seek to craft music that is both technically compelling and emotionally resonant.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Technologies like AI will undoubtedly influence the music and art industry; however, I don’t anticipate a significant impact on my work, as my creative process remains deeply rooted in classical tradition.
