Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Hsu
Hi Ray, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in the creative industry with a background in New Media Arts, which gave me a strong foundation in visual storytelling and design. Over the years, I transitioned into brand strategy and project management, working across advertising, marketing, and content creation. My experience spans from startups to established brands, where I’ve helped bring creative ideas to life through strategic planning and execution.
A turning point in my career was working at Not A Gallery in Beijing, my second job, where I was first exposed to the fast-paced world of innovation and entrepreneurship. It was there that I learned to navigate the intersection of art, branding, and business, managing projects that pushed creative boundaries while staying commercially viable. I gained hands-on experience in creative direction, event marketing, and business strategy, which fueled my passion for turning bold ideas into reality. From there, I pursued a Master’s in Design Management at Pratt Institute, refining my skills in business strategy, user experience, and creative leadership.
Now, I’m at a point where I want to blend my expertise in design, storytelling, and strategy to create impactful work that resonates with audiences. I thrive in collaborative environments, and I’m excited to keep growing, taking on new challenges, and pushing creative boundaries.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Of course not, it hasn’t been a smooth road at all. I took a gap year during COVID-19, which forced me to step back and really think about what I wanted to do, where I wanted to live, and what kind of future I envisioned for myself. Luckily, between 2020 and 2022, I passed my IELTS test, worked on an urban design project in Taiwan, and, most importantly, discovered a lifestyle that truly resonated with me.
Moving to the U.S. for my master’s degree was another big step, and I won’t say there haven’t been struggles—because there always are. But for me, it’s not about avoiding struggles; it’s about learning to manage them and pushing forward instead of giving up. I struggled with passing my English test, debated whether to return to China for work, and questioned where I could truly explore and grow. And honestly, I still grapple with some of these questions today.
The only thing I can do is give my best effort and take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve always been drawn to storytelling through art and design, and my work sits at the intersection of creative strategy, branding, and experiential design. I started in advertising, but over time, I expanded my focus to include innovation, entrepreneurship, and cultural experiences. My projects often blend art, commerce, and technology to create something both visually compelling and deeply meaningful.
I specialize in visual storytelling, brand strategy, and creative project management, and I’m known for bringing bold, unconventional ideas to life. One of my most creative projects was designing a museum for chicken—yes, an actual museum. It was a collaboration with a traditional Chinese restaurant chain, where we transformed their brand story into an immersive experience, blending history, culture, and playfulness. That project reinforced my belief that brands are more than just logos—they’re narratives waiting to be told in innovative ways.
What sets me apart is my ability to adapt, push boundaries, and bring ideas to life with both creativity and precision. I don’t just come up with concepts—I make them real, engaging, and impactful. I thrive at the crossroads of art, design, branding, and technology, always looking for ways to turn abstract ideas into tangible experiences that resonate.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creative freedom and the ability to keep exploring. I believe that the best ideas come from pushing boundaries, questioning norms, and experimenting fearlessly. Whether it’s in art, branding, or experiential design, I always seek opportunities to create something unexpected and meaningful.
Why? Because curiosity is what keeps me moving forward. Every project, every challenge, every risk I take is a step toward learning something new—about the world, about people, and about myself. I don’t want to just follow trends; I want to shape them, disrupt them, and redefine how stories are told. That’s what drives me every day.
