Exploring Life & Business with Phillip Lawrence of Shift Training Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Lawrence

Hi Phillip, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Shift Training started with a discussion about the value of emotional intelligence in everyday life. The initial question was “what would the world look like if people treated themselves and each other better?” At the time this conversation was with a peer about the types of questions students from our varying professions would ask us. We noticed a trend and wanted to see if there was something useful there. After some research and testing, Shift Training was founded and we started with personal coaching services that were focused on various aspects of emotional wellness and holistic health. This was 1 year prior to Covid so the timing was ironic. We had already hosted growth and connection focused events prior to Covid and planned to do more, the need was just enhanced after that. As things began to open back up we were able to host additional workshops and gatherings for adults and teens. As of today, Shift Training provides multiple services that are rooted in holistic health, connection, and personal development. The guiding goal is to positively impact the quality of human interaction through the various services and events we provide. We want to see many more positive interactions amongst people. Our thesis is that growing as individuals, better connecting, and contributing to the environment we want to see is a significant part of reaching our goal.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has absolutely not been smooth. Some of the common struggles include trying to keep a business open past the first few years and making it through the pandemic. There is always plenty to learn in business, especially when working in a sector or space that is only in recent history seen as valuable.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Shift Training Inc.?
Shift Training provides personal and professional training services and events rooted in emotional wellness, holistic health, and cognitive behavioral training to improve the quality of human interaction for their clients, community, and partners.

At Shift we emphasize that improving connection and overall wellness, makes more success in any area of life possible, thus adding to a more beautiful life experience.

Our current focus is growing our community through the social fitness club. The purpose of the social fitness club is to build a supportive community where individuals come together, work hard, participate in a beautiful shared experience, and nurture new connections. We aim to deliver a meaningful experience through creating an environment where everyone supports one another, challenges themselves, celebrates achievements, and is conducive for creating quality relationships with themselves and others.

Shift’s approach to sustained development uniquely sets us apart. Unlike many competitors, Shift does not rely on indefinite client dependence but instead fosters growth that enables clients to “graduate” from its programs. Our aim is to empower our clients. We do not want to hold onto to them forever as a client. At some point we hope to see clients in the capacity to support others within their ecosystem. This is what allows us to have more partners we can collaborate with or simply create something meaningful and enjoyable.

Additionally, specifically in our social fitness club, we blend fitness, emotional support, and community-building, offering a comprehensive alternative to competitors focused on narrower aspects of wellness. Instead of focusing on one area of learning or connecting with others, we combine several in a specific way.

At the end of 2024, we held our last social fitness event of the year. Since the start of the year we’ve been spending a great deal of time on how we can improve things and make it even better. We’ll be relaunching our social fitness club and related services by Summer 2025 and Relaunching our podcast as well.

As the founder, I would say that I am most proud of what Shift stands for and the positive impact we’ve had thus far with our clients, members, and partners. I’m beyond grateful for that.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
That’s tough, because I’m not sure it’s related to the business but let’s see. I think one of my favorites is there was a Christmas where we were opening gifts and I remember there were two boxes I set aside to ignore. I set them aside because as a kid I was not very interested in receiving clothes, I wanted to open all the boxes with toys first. I remember my mom and my aunt insisted that I open those two boxes and I said I don’t want to open those because I know there are clothes in there. Eventually I opened them and when I did, the exact toys that I wanted the most, popped out of those boxes when I was unwrapping them. I was shocked, very pleasantly surprised. Today I look back on that as a lesson in never judge a book by it’s cover. Be a little more curious, maybe open it up and see haha.
