Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Hach Hearne
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a screenwriter from Colorado who moved out to make it in Hollywood, and lo and behold, I did! I worked as a journalist in Denver in addition to performing with an improv comedy troupe, but combining my love of writing and movies was always my first love. California accepted me and I found my tribe of like-minded creative weirdos.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I won the Disney Screenwriting Fellowship pretty quickly upon moving to Los Angeles and was assigned Freaky Friday as my first assignment. I thought making it in Hollywood was strangely easy – it has taken me the next 25 years to realize it is not.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a screenwriter (FREAKY FRIDAY, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU’RE EXPECTING), Broadway librettist (LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL) and novelist (THE TROUBLE WITH DROWNING).
I am most proud of Legally Blonde as I so incorporates everything I love about the arts—great music, a positive message, girl power, killer dancing and FUN. I was so thrilled when I received a Tony nomination for my work and we won the Olivier in London!
I think Legally Blonde is so personal to me because I relate to the underestimated characters of Elle Woods and I also had my first (and only and favorite!) daughter during the production—a nutty time but thrilling!
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
That it’s a long road that goes incredibly fast. You have to learn how to navigate the setbacks and keep at it… this business is not for the faint at heart. I think the biggest challenges of being in the entertainment industry are working through disappointments and learning how to handle letdowns. It makes the victories that much sweeter, but you cannot give up!
