Conversations with Julia Brill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julia Brill

Hi Julia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Upon graduating from USC with a degree in Communications and obtaining my real estate license, I enrolled in UCLA’s interior design program while securing an internship at a premier design firm for the next two years. Upon completing my studies, I took the leap and started my own business and just celebrated our 30 year anniversary.
In 2006, I opened a showroom in the Pacific Design Center. However, after two years, I realized that showroom ownership was not my true passion. During this time, my future business partner, Catherine Preisz, with a background in fashion and jewelry, owned a clothing boutique in Westlake. Coincidentally, she also closed her store around the same time. In 2010, we joined forces and became business partners.
Our partnership is a perfect balance, as we complement each other’s strengths and bring unique perspectives to every project. Together, we provide custom design concepts tailored to each client’s vision. Our mission is to turn dreams into reality, transforming houses into homes through thoughtful and personalized design.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the biggest challenges we face is working with clients whose partners have different tastes. In these situations, we often find ourselves acting as mediators and, at times, even marriage counselors. Our ability to listen, understand both perspectives, and find creative compromises is one of our best attributes. We pride ourselves on being problem solvers, coming up with solutions that satisfy both parties while maintaining a cohesive and beautiful design. By blending styles and finding common ground, we ensure that every space we create reflects a harmonious balance that both partners can love and appreciate.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We believe no project is too small. Our journey began in 1994 with a single piece of art hung for a client—a simple task that led to a $200,000 project. That same philosophy drives us today, offering flexible, hourly-based services tailored to each client’s needs.
Our portfolio spans a diverse range of projects, from luxury residences in Beverly Park to hospitality spaces including a hotel in Beverly Hills and restaurant in Culver City and the Valley. Our work extends throughout Southern California, from Westlake to Malibu, Beverly Hills, West Hollywood, and beyond. We also take our expertise nationwide, with projects in Park City, NYC, and Miami. Whether it’s a single room refresh or a full-scale renovation, we bring creativity, experience, and a client-first approach to every space we design.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
We both have a deep appreciation for food and love the thrill of discovering new restaurants, always seeking out unique flavors and dining experiences. Exploring new spaces excites us, whether it’s a cutting-edge gallery, a thoughtfully designed showroom, or an innovative artistic installation. Creativity and originality draw us in, and we are inspired by fresh ideas in food, art, and design. Our adventures in discovering new places and experiences remain limitless. We thrive on variety and the excitement of the unknown. We seek out experiences that challenge convention and spark curiosity.
