Today we’d like to introduce you to Sid Katragadda

Hi Sid, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Sid Katragadda (a.k.a Siddharth Katragadda) is an Indian-American artist known for his distinctive artistic style, which blends vibrant colors and surreal, dreamlike imagery with deep emotional and philosophical themes. His work often explores topics such as identity, spirituality, and the human condition, making him a unique voice in contemporary art and literature.

Katragadda is also recognized for his literary contributions, including poetry and prose, and films, which are celebrated for their lyrical quality and introspective nature. His multidisciplinary approach allows him to weave storytelling, visual art, and emotion into compelling pieces that resonate with a wide audience.

Katragadda has been painting since he was around five, but started exhibiting and selling his art only in 2005. For the next decade, he was prolific, selling nearly 50 of his Abstract “Dark Indian Women” series paintings to private collectors across the world. He took a break from painting in 2015, to focus on films and writing, before returning to art in 2022, when he painted a series of 12 Western paintings in what he calls Holeism style, based on various humanitarian issues. He also returned to his abstract Indian women, creating the first of his Timism style paintings.

Katragadda’s paintings have been exhibited and collected worldwide. He has sold over a 100 paintings in a career spanning from 2008 to present, with collectors in India, Dubai, Australia, Singapore, and America.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has certainly not been an easy journey. When I came to America for my Master’s degree, I had only five hundred dollars in my pocket. I had no idea how I would pay for my next semester’s tuition or even cover the rent for the following month. To make ends meet, I took on various odd jobs on campus—working as a waiter, mail sorter, lab assistant, and eventually securing a position as a Software research assistant. These struggles carried me through until I landed my first job at Qualcomm.

The biggest challenges in my artistic journey have always been time, space, and location. As a full-time engineer, finding time for art was difficult, but by practicing time-slicing, I managed to divide my hours efficiently between different creative pursuits. Space was another hurdle—I never had the luxury of a large studio, and in my early years, I painted in the small area above my washer and dryer. Location, however, has been the toughest challenge of all. My art is deeply rooted in Indian styles, yet exhibiting in India while living in the U.S. has been incredibly difficult. Galleries are often hesitant to work with an artist based overseas, and shipping sold paintings internationally is costly and complicated. Despite these obstacles, I have managed to sell over a hundred paintings to collectors around the world, proving that passion and persistence can overcome even the toughest barriers.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Katragadda’s art is built on three pillars: Meaning, Social Impact, and Innovation. His paintings are not merely meant to decorate walls but to decorate minds, each piece carrying a story—an urgent message for social change. He envisions his work as a time capsule, preserving society as it exists today for future generations. A hundred years from now, he wants his art to reflect the world’s struggles, hopes, and transformations. Innovation is at the core of his philosophy, echoing Picasso’s belief that every new painting series must push art forward—never repeating oneself or others.

As the founder of multiple artistic movements still in their infancy, including Holeism, Timism, Soulism, Technism (Artech), and Feminism, Katragadda seeks to redefine artistic boundaries. Holeism, a style he pioneered and hopes to popularize, is characterized by the use of conduits through which one subject trespasses another, creating a sense of permeability. Timism captures the passage of time within a single canvas, illustrating transitions between eras or fleeting moments. Soulism moves beyond the physical, depicting the essence and spirit of individuals rather than their outward form. Feminism, as an art style, portrays culture through women and the female form, reflecting Katragadda’s belief that the true essence of any civilization is revealed through its women and the way society has shaped them. If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
As a multidisciplinary artist and an engineer, my life has often felt like a balancing act between diverse realms of creativity and technology. Juggling multiple crafts can sometimes feel disorienting, but it aligns perfectly with my personality. I have an insatiable urge to keep learning, whether it’s through artistic challenges or the intersection of art and innovation that life throws my way.

I entered the world of art at a young age, always painting and doodling as a child. One of the earliest influences in my artistic journey was a book on Russian realist painters that was gifted to me. This sparked my initial interest in representational art, but over time, I found myself drawn to the bold, boundless world of Abstract art. It wasn’t until 2008 that I began to seriously exhibit and sell my work. Between 2008 and 2015, I had a highly productive phase, selling over fifty paintings from my “Dark Indian Women” series to private collectors around the world. These paintings became my signature, an exploration of cultural identity through abstraction and vivid color.

While I was fully immersed in the visual arts, I also nurtured my passion for writing. Fiction came naturally to me, and I published two novels-in-verse, both of which won the San Diego Book Awards in poetry. My second prose novel also became a runner-up for the prestigious Red Hen Fiction Award. Writing had always been a part of my life, beginning with comic strips and short stories in my youth, before expanding into larger, more complex works.

Filmmaking, however, was the last artistic frontier I ventured into. I wrote and directed my first student feature film during a vacation to India, completing the entire production in just two weeks. Since then, I’ve made several short films that have been well-received in the festival circuit, earning a few awards along the way. My approach to screenwriting, much like my writing process, has been largely self-taught. I learned by watching and reading the work of other writers, absorbing their techniques, and adapting them to my own voice.

Ultimately, my learning process across art, writing, and filmmaking has been one of constant exploration and experimentation. I’m a firm believer in self-learning—observing the work of other artists, experimenting with new ideas, and pushing myself to evolve. Whether through the brush, the pen, or the camera, I approach each medium as a new challenge, driven by the same fundamental desire to create and communicate.
