Meet Ana Gomez Bernaus of West Side

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ana Gomez Bernaus

Hi Ana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in Barcelona, a city deeply influenced by Catalan Modernism—a movement in art, architecture, and literature from the turn of the 20th century, celebrated for its rich, organic yet controlled ornamentation and intricate details. Iconic landmarks like Antoni Gaudí’s Parc Güell, La Sagrada Família, and Casa Batlló are well-known examples, but what’s truly remarkable is how modernism permeates everyday life in Barcelona. It can be found in shop signage, street tiles, and even the design of street lamps. Growing up surrounded by this environment instilled in me a deep appreciation for detail-oriented visuals.

As a child, I loved drawing and always had a clear sense of what I wanted to pursue professionally. Becoming a designer and visual artist felt like a natural evolution. In 2009, I made the life-changing decision to move to New York City. Immersing myself in a new city, learning a new language, and being close to NYC’s vibrant design and typography scene profoundly shaped my growth as a commercial artist. Then, in 2012, I moved to Los Angeles, where I discovered my true artistic passion: working in the 3D space.

The dimensionality of 3D tools transformed visual design into a sculptural exercise, making the creative process both engaging and deeply fulfilling. In LA, I began creating 3D art independently of client briefs. This became my channel for expressing my personal voice. I love building objects and scenes, experimenting with translucent and transparent materials, and playing with light to craft captivating visual illusions.

Each piece is a journey of discovery, constructed by layering glass-like materials to manipulate shapes through distortion. Through precise modeling, intentional composition, and careful manipulation of light, I create sculptural scenes where every element converges into a singular image. These pieces exist within a unique point of view—captured by the camera—making them simultaneously tangible and ephemeral.

Working with digital tools often surprises me, turning the creative process into an ongoing collaboration with the software itself. Every day, I learn something new, which makes this journey incredibly rewarding.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road! But every challenge has been worth it to take risks and grow along the way. Leaving Barcelona, where I had my small business, was one of the first major decisions I made. It meant changing everything about my life—it was a little scary but also incredibly exciting.

As a foreigner, navigating the immigration process was one of the biggest hurdles. Even under the best circumstances, the sheer volume of documentation and steps involved made it a long and sometimes overwhelming journey. I’m proud to say I’m now an American citizen and very happy to be done with all the paperwork! 😉

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work spans several areas, each offering unique creative challenges. I am an Associate Creative Director at Buck, where I focus on 3D animated commercials and system design projects for major brands. These projects are driven by storytelling, allowing me to craft compelling narratives that resonate with audiences.

I’m also represented by Richard Solomon in NYC, through whom I take on editorial and advertising 3D lettering freelance projects for clients like The Los Angeles Times, Adobe, and Microsoft. These projects are a lot of fun because they let me flex my lettering skills while solving the unique challenges of commercial briefs.

Another aspect of my work that I’m incredibly proud of is my 3D illustrative lettering course on Domestika. We created it with beginners in mind, guiding them through the entire process—from design and building to texturing and lighting—so they can create a visually rich 3D lettering piece to add to their portfolios. Learning 3D through online tutorials was a pivotal moment in my career, so collaborating with Domestika on this course felt like a full-circle moment.

Lastly, my personal 3D art is where I express myself most freely. This is my space for experimentation—opening new paths, exploring visual solutions, and creating pieces that come from within. One of the most fascinating aspects of working in 3D is the ability to play with the laws of physics. The software is designed to mimic reality, but it also gives me the freedom to manipulate every setting, opening up endless possibilities.

In my work, pieces emerge from the layering of opaque and transparent objects. Each piece is more than the sum of its parts—it’s the interplay of objects in space, seen through varying levels of reflection and refraction. What captivates me most is how a piece transforms as soon as I move the camera, revealing something entirely new. This dynamic quality is the signature of my work, offering me not only the joy of creating art but also an endless supply of surprises and discoveries.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Curiosity is one of the strongest driving forces for progress and creativity. It’s what keeps me eager to learn, explore, and grow. Curiosity also makes everyday life so much more exciting—whether it’s listening to podcasts, reading books, visiting exhibitions, trying new restaurants, or walking on the sand during low tide. These seemingly small activities hold immense power for the creative process, fueling inspiration in unexpected ways.

Los Angeles is one of the few places where all of these experiences are within arm’s reach. From its vibrant art scene to its stunning natural landscapes, the city offers endless opportunities to stay inspired and engaged. I feel incredibly fortunate to live here and to have access to everything this city has to offer.
