Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhiannon Roze
Hi Rhiannon, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was DJing before I knew what DJing was. As a kid, I had a desire to hear songs that I liked in a certain order so I made mixtapes for myself using a cassette player, and played these tapes for friends. Electronic dance music was always my favourite. When we’d visit family in the UK each summer, I’d buy CDs of the latest European Dance Music. I remember hearing The Prodigy for the first time while in England and I was blown away. My older sister collected vinyl and purchased a second turntable and mixer in the late 90s. I wasn’t allowed to ‘touch her things’ but you better believe I snuck into her room and messed around on those Technics whenever she went out! I started my own vinyl collection and saved up for turntables, which I purchased in 2001 and still have today. I was a vinyl DJ for 8 years until I was forced to go digital in order to keep gigging. CDJs had taken over the industry but eventually it swung back to turntables with the invention of Serato. Then CDJs took over again once they offered USB inputs, and it’s been pretty consistent ever since. I grew up in Vancouver, BC, Canada but my desire to expand my DJ career led me to Los Angeles, California in 2010. I started writing and recording lyrics and producing music videos in 2011, I toured the globe for many years representing “Female DJs” and then I started learning how to produce my own electronic dance music in 2017.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I’m at a point now where I can look back on over two decades of being in this industry and see how valuable all of the obstacles and challenges were that I faced. I’ve been on many wild adventures, both personally and professionally. I think this is because I was constantly doing things that I hadn’t seen anyone do before, so I was always learning as I went – and boy was it messy (and fun af). I thrived on challenges, adventures, and new opportunities but I can’t say I really knew what I was doing. Things just worked out for me because I was naturally tenacious, passionate, and hard-working. Eventually, however, I started feeling a bit lost, like something was missing, and that’s when I discovered and fell in love with producing my own music in Ableton. I got lost once more when the lockdowns happened in 2020, and I can see now that this was because I didn’t have a mentor or community of producers to connect with during that period. I didn’t discover that essential resource until 2023 when I took a bootcamp at an online music production & business school called Cosmic Academy. Thanks to them, for the first time in my career, I feel clear about what I want to do and how to do it. What I learned from them has allowed me to become intentional about my artist project and take it seriously, and simultaneously have more fun with it. It honestly feels like starting over again and it’s very exciting!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been a DJ for over 20 years so DJing is definitely my specialty but in 2025 I’m all-in on my artist project which means I’m doing less DJ-for-hire gigs and more artist showcase gigs where I get to represent myself and my sound as an artist and producer. This means I’m DJing where I get to play and perform the music that I’ve always been most passionate about, including my original music. I gravitate towards anything and everything high-energy, gritty, and fun so my DJ sets are exciting to attend. I love connecting with the crowd, making people feel like they’re part of the show, and inviting them into my energy field (highly recommend accepting the invitation). I enjoy playing a mix of underground and popular sounds within the dance music genres of Bass House, Bassline, UK Bass, 140, UK Garage, Drum & Bass, Speed House, Breaks, Electro, and everything in between. I love taking people on a journey and guiding them each step of the way. If there’s a microphone present, I’m hopping on it to rap over my originals live!
What were you like growing up?
I’ve been drawn to the stage since I was very young -dancing, acting, speaking, performing, playing… It’s where I thrive because I love sharing my energy with people -to entertain, uplift, and inspire others. My Mum endearingly called me a ‘cheeky little devil’ as I had no inhibitions as a child. I loved making people laugh and I would do anything to entertain family, friends, and neighbours. I’ve also always loved music. My Mum says that when she’d push me around in a stroller and we’d go somewhere that had music playing, I would insist on being unbuckled so I could get up and dance. Apparently I would draw a crowd when I did this so it makes sense that I grew up to be a one-woman show! During my elementary school years, I played piano and took ballet, tap, jazz, musical theatre, modern stage, and acting classes. My love for sports and academics overshadowed my love for the dramatic arts, however, and during my high school and university years, I was focused on getting straight A’s and playing soccer and volleyball. I discovered DJing during these years as well, and later managed to reincorporate dramatic arts into my life via music videos. I’ve dabbled in acting in the form of Voiceover since then, booking spots with McDonald’s, NerdWallet, Apple Podcasts, and others. I wish I had time to do it all tbh! I often joke about cloning myself so that I can. Maybe it’s a Gemini rising thing. 😉
