Inspiring Conversations with Patricia Franklin of Franklin Freelance Writing Consulting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Franklin

Hi Patricia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
It all started on June 24, 2015 when I received the life changing call that my sister, my best friend, confidant, my partner in crime, my world had been murdered. I remember the words my cousin uttered, “Alicia is dead” in that moment the room started spinning, my vision became blurry, I held on to my pregnant belly scared that I would hurt my unborn child. I finally was able to catch my breath, I finally found my footing and all I could say was, “Really? Are they sure it was her?”, my cousin winced and said tearfully, “Yes, Patti it was her”. It has been nine years since I received that call and in that moment I knew that the trajectory of my world had changed, in that moment I felt apart of my soul had died, in that moment I saw my sisters life past before me, in that moment I felt so lost, confused, alone for the first time in my life. In that very moment, I felt that I had to be two daughters for my parents, in that moment …….. I hit the ground running and NEVER stopped.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road after my sisters murder became a tunneled vision highway for me where I gained this unexplainable vision of finishing everything that she never had a chance too. But also finding my way without her. I was never alone it was always she and I and for every milestone I hit in my life the image of her was always was enlightening. I heard her words in my darkest hours, I saw her smile gleaming, I felt her warmth. I knew that I had this fire inside of me, she had always felt it and seen me for me but I was just getting to know myself. I became a first time mother after Alicia’s murder it was bittersweet to have this beautiful baby girl but a wave of sadness because my sister was gone. In addition to my sister’s untimely death, all of my matriarchs passed away in 2017. I think that was the first time in my life that I questioned God. My grandmother was my bestfriend and I spoke with her daily. She gave me a voice, a platform, identity and made me feel that no matter what hurdle came my way that I was going to be able to jump and land gracefully. My aunts had done the same for me. My Aunt Pam taught me how to be a professional and the importance of knowing your self-worth. My Aunt Barbara whom I would fondly call “My Angel”, showed me the importance of image, how to be classy and to always put God first. Losing these phenomenal pillars in my life as well as my sister, created a large void in my life.

By God’s grace, the unwavering love and support of my husband and my children I have found my “reason” to live and to continue living. This year I have been able to “rest and reset”. After fighting for justice for my sister’s murder, her case is finally closed and I have been able to be at peace. A peace that I have never felt and I am becoming someone I’ve never been before. I have face and will continue to face the places and spaces that hurt me the most to become the best version of myself. I am in my cocoon and steadily shedding to become the butterfly I have always dreamed to be. I have also been able to pursue one of my life-long dreams of being in a Sorority. I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated and look forward to welcoming in everything that comes with my newfound journey. This is my “rebirth”, I am the blue rose that grew from the concrete and I am building my legacy brick by brick.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Franklin Freelance Writing Consulting?
The vision for Franklin Freelance Writing Consulting came about in 2020 when I was a stay at home mom and a graduate student. I was blessed to have the opportunity to stay home with my son and got the idea of how helpful it would be for someone to be able to edit/revise my lengthy papers. Although I had the time to do so I remember feeling so overwhelmed with the amount of work that grad school entails. That is when the idea of Franklin Freelance Writing Consulting came about. I began small with one to two clients a week so I that I wouldn’t get too behind with my own studies. Once I completed my program I was able to support more students and then opened up the forum to support business professionals. I wanted to create something that was affordable for students and also provide the hands-on service so we both learn and grow together. It has been four years since Franklin Freelance has been operating and I am blessed to say that my business is flourishing. The services I provide are resumes, cover letters, writing support, edits/revisions, business proposals, speech writing, and I am currently exploring grant writing. In addition to my writing services, I also use Instagram as a platform to promote my “Morning Messages”. The thought process with the “Morning Messages” was to provide a raw and real life perspective with a dash of my personality. We are all human, growing, evolving and gathering information as we go. I wanted my platform to be multi-faceted and with the support of friends/family Franklin Freelance has helped hundreds of students and even more business professionals.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
When God gives you a VISION, use it! When there is something that he gifts you I will say he will not allow for you to sleep at night until every word of what he says is written down. I revamp my business this year and I was up two nights in a row because of the many ideas and thoughts I had about Franklin Freelance. The beauty in being an entrepreneur is that you can continue to “revamp” your business and vision. It takes a lot of time in the beginning because of course you have to learn your niche, the best marketing strategies, how you would like your brand to be seen and ultimately how to balance it all. What I wish I knew when first starting out is the influence a business can have on people. I believe in being not just marketable but also communicative, professional and honest with all my clients. There are clients that I work with once and I don’t hear from them again until months later. Then there are those who utilize my services for every aspect of their lives. Either way I am extremely grateful and thankful for each experience.
