Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Louise Rector
Hi Sarah Louise, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In 2016, my relocation from the UK to Los Angeles provided an opportunity to pursue a new career trajectory. With a background in professional dancing and modeling, I had always been dedicated to physical well-being, making the transition into the fitness industry a natural progression for me. Although my move to Los Angeles was driven by personal reasons, it sparked a renewed focus and enthusiasm for building a community dedicated to fitness and self-improvement.
Upon my arrival, I embraced the opportunity to join ModelFIT, a new boutique fitness studio, where I earned certification as a fitness professional. I began teaching group fitness classes, which quickly gained popularity and established my reputation within the LA fitness scene. My growing presence on social media led to further recognition, culminating in my selection as a top-selling author on DailyOM, where I have successfully sold hundreds of thousands of workout courses.
In 2020, I launched my own thriving workout platform and app, The SLR LIFE. This platform allows subscribers to access on-demand fitness sessions anytime, anywhere, with me providing encouragement and support throughout their fitness journey.
With over 20 years of experience in the modeling industry, I continue to participate in photo and video shoots and maintain a career in TV hosting within Hollywood. I am dedicated to producing content that promotes fitness, health, and wellness while navigating a balanced life at 40.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Upon moving to Los Angeles, I faced several challenges. Initially, I knew no one in the city except for my husband, which made it difficult to build a new professional network. Balancing the demands of teaching numerous fitness classes while striving to avoid burnout was another significant struggle. It may be surprising but the pay for fitness trainers in the early days was not very good so I really needed to keep selling out classes and taking on private clients to create more of a sustainable income. I also deeply missed my family and friends in the UK, which added to the emotional strain.
Working in Los Angeles, a highly competitive fitness market, presented its own set of challenges. Establishing myself in such a saturated field required considerable effort and resilience. This definitely tests you mental skills as you are constantly trying to remind yourself that “no one is you” whilst being physically exhausted all of the time as my workout teaching involves me teaching 80% of the classes. Additionally, the onset of the pandemic introduced the complex task of developing a workout app from scratch. Navigating this new venture amidst the uncertainties of the pandemic was both daunting and demanding.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a fitness expert, I create on-demand workout videos for The SLR LIFE app, overseeing all aspects of the platform, including account management, marketing, and video editing. I engage with subscribers to always make sure I am creating workouts that keep them motivated and seeing results to maintain a personal relationship in a virtual approach.
In addition to my work with my brand The SLR LIFE, I train private clients in the Los Angeles area and provide virtual training sessions for clients internationally. I also collaborate with brands to produce engaging content for social media, leveraging my expertise to enhance their fitness wellness and beauty-related campaigns.
When it comes to fitness training, I specialize in increasing mobility, improving posture, targeting the smaller muscles, building a lean physique and helping make fitness fun! My style is low impact sculpt with a Pilates element and for the cardio side an energetic aerobics fitness vibe.
I’m most proud of launching a business and being the wearer of many hats! I love to help others feel good and help them move their body in a way that doesn’t seem intimidating or unattainable.
I am constantly told my energy is infectious, even through a screen so that makes me extremely happy to help lift others up.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the world of technology constantly evolving I only hope I can grow the platform even more. I feel with the world of social media, everyone is getting more and more into fitness and taking care of their bodies and can only see that growing even more.
