Rising Stars: Meet Victoria (Tori) Young

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria (Tori) Young.

Hi Victoria (Tori), thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
August 2021, I had been working for the same company for nearly ten years. Although I was very good at it, I was unhappy & anxious. I felt like my world was collapsing and couldn’t do anything about it because I was constantly working. The spark was gone, and all that was left was “the grind.” My husband, who has a business of his own, urged me to change careers. It always felt impossible. There were too many bills to pay, and too much of my life was invested in this career path. Finally, the time came when I had to do something. I left my job and gave myself a break to figure out which new path I would take.

I have always been interested in makeup and knew someone else who had gotten into Permanent Makeup. It seemed like a great industry to get into because of all the advances in techniques, its growing popularity, and I would get to use my creative side! I signed up for classes at Hollywood Makeup School, and I was so nervous about starting over. As I was walking up on my first day of class, I remember telling myself, “You are going to introduce yourself to everyone in your class, make friends, and be confident.” So I did! It made the experience so much more fun to have friends to interact and work with.
After school, I came home and was excited to tell everyone about the information I had just learned. I had a new passion that had been ignited in me! I practiced my technique and worked hard to perfect it. I knew I had to keep this newly gained confidence and use it to get the ball rolling on my business. I wanted my business to stand out and reflect my style, so I decided on a cute witchy theme. Bewitching Beauty was born, and I started to think of ideas to incorporate my personality into my business.

My husband is a web designer and helped me design my website and get it up and running. I rented a booth at Ink Sanity Tattoo Shop, from my friend Robb who took a chance on me. Kiana, An artist friend of mine, helped make my logo idea a reality. Then my very first client was my mom! I did powder brows on her, and after I was done, I felt so good! My confidence and spark was back!

Bewitching Beauty has now been in business for 8 months and has grown so much. I am always looking for new ways to get my name out there, and have met some really great people in the process. What started as just brows is now brows and lip blushing, with eyeliner coming soon! Running your own business is difficult at times, but it is gratifying, and I am so happy that I took the leap to get where I am today.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Starting your own business is definitely not always smooth sailing. The first bump in the road was of myself! It was hard to let go of what I knew and move forward. I’ve had to overcome negative self talk through therapy and excerises, to regain confidence and use it to succeed! Another difficulty in the last 8 months has been learning how to advertise, meet new people, and get new clients. This struggle is discussed all over PMU forums and chats. To overcome this I have been diligent at posting to groups, keeping my Instagram fresh, and adding new content to my website. I also did my first festival this spring where I was able to feature my business to local residents in my area.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Permanent Makeup Artist who currently offers Microblading, Powder Brows, Combination Brows, & Lip Blushing. I am also certified in Eyeliner and adding it to my services at the end of Summer. I would say that I am most known for my Combination Brows. I enjoy them because they are the best of both worlds! You get the cute hairstrokes towards the front of your brow from the microblading, with the sleek definition down to the tail from the machine shading. I love the way they transform my clients’ appearance!

I pride myself in always putting my clients first. I am honest with them about the service they want and if it is going to work for them. I offer alternatives when possible, but do not make empty promises just to make a buck. I always take the time to advise my clients of any risks they may have due to health concerns, skin type, skin maturity, etc. I also provide my clients with detailed pre-care and aftercare instructions for their service. You would be surprised how many PMU artists fail to take these imperative steps!

Aside from my attention to detail when it comes to my clients, another thing that makes me stand out, is the fun atmosphere of the shop and my style. I wanted my business to be an extension of myself. I am easy to talk to, non judgemental, and am a real person! I am not afraid to be myself, and I think that is something that everyone deserves. I don’t fit the cookie cutter PMU boutique style, and I dont want to. It’s just not my style!

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I would consider myself a risk taker. I love going new places, trying new foods, and doing things that get my blood pumping. If there are great rewards, then I am happy to take risks. Changing your career in your mid-thirties is definitely a risk, and not something that people do very often. I may not succeed, but it was a risk I was willing to take for my own happiness. I knew that if I took the risk and failed that I could always go back to what I was doing, but if I didn’t try I would regret forever. A lot of my friends express their admiration towards me for having the guts to start over and put myself out there, and I’m so glad I did.
