Rising Stars: Meet Tyler Lee Cushing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Lee Cushing.

Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was first interested in film through my grandparents who were an avid artist through painting and photography. They also showed me some of my first films (ET, King Kong, Jaws) that I still cherish as some of my favorite films to date. When I was 13, I was asked by my family what instrument I wanted to learn, and I chose turntables shortly after I was DJing my school dances. After grade school, I went to school in Santa Barbara and San Francisco to study film and launch my career in the film industry. While in college, I also was DJing parties and local events in each city. Finally, I was finished with school and moved to LA to work in the film industry. On day one of living in LA was DJing my housewarming and birthday party where I met my forever partner in crime Stephanie Reese, and we now have our own production/event companies and art projects that we love to share with the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Luckily it has been a smooth road, I am greatly fortunate to know exactly what I wanted to do at a young age and have an immensely supportive family and friends.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Traditionally I work on a multitude of projects across the entertainment landscape. In the film industry, I predominantly work as a Cinematographer for feature films and music videos.

In the festival/live event space, I Dj, produce, stage manage, and do lighting design as well as liaison with our artists.

We started with what are now legendary parties at our home in LA (The Glitter Factory), and in 2022 we decided to bring our signature house party vibes to the masses. We built an art car for Burning Man (The Atomic Pussy), ran a renegade camp at DirtyBird Campout (The GlitterCats), and are currently planning our own festivals for the spring of 2023.

All of these experiences are what sets our production companies (The Glitter Factory/The Glitter Cats/Apocalypse Meow.) apart. We are best known for the environments we create: providing some of the best art/sound/and visuals as well as the community and energy we generate. Whether it’s projection mapping AI generated visuals throughout our space, or our fully programmable led walled stage, classic open tiki bar “The Bad Lei”, the motion-activated LED ball pit, or our burning man art car/DJ stage we have something for everybody.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The pandemic was a big factor in our growth. We were able to live stream our DJ sets and private parties during the crisis on twitch to help grow our following. as well as give us the tools to live stream our current and future events. But mainly, the pandemic gave us a great insight on how to make our events safer and cleaner for everyone.
