Rising Stars: Meet Shayla Cook

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayla Cook.

Shayla, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
At the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, I had just started a new career in fitness as a personal trainer and stretch therapist. When gyms shut down everywhere, I had no work and a lot of time on my hands, so I knew I had to do something productive.

I’ve always had a passion for fitness but always struggled to find gym clothes that fit me correctly and had unique designs that weren’t identical to the person working out next to me. I’ve also never liked working for other people or having a boss, so starting my own business just made sense. After a little brainstorming, I decided that it was the perfect time to create my own line of fitness apparel, and that was when Dripping Blaze was born!

I knew absolutely nothing about designing, manufacturing, or the fashion industry, but I knew I couldn’t just sit around waiting for the world to reopen, so I started researching. One thing lead to another, and before I knew it, I was in way deeper than I ever thought I would be and was so motivated to actually come full circle with my idea.

Now here I am almost two years later, finally launching the brand that I started completely from scratch!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! Designing clothes is very tedious, and there’s a lot of logistics involved. It gets very confusing and stressful especially when you’re working with people in other countries where language is a barrier.

Since I started with no prior experience or knowledge of anything I was doing, there were a lot of bumps along the way. I made many mistakes that cost me a lot of time and money, but that’s honestly just part of the journey to success. Sometimes you just have to learn as you go!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on? What are you known for?
Besides designing my fitness apparel and running my business, I am also a Certified Personal Trainer and Stretch Therapist. Fitness has always been my passion, so I love that my career puts me in the gym environment every day!

It sounds funny, but I’d say I’m known for walking into the gym with the least amount of clothes possible! People think there is something wrong if I wear pants! My brand also reflects this because all the designs are meant to show off the body in a tasteful way.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always independent and hard working. I preferred to do things on my own rather than ask for help. I hated rules and being told what to do because I loved the feeling of freedom and doing things my own way. Following the norm was just never for me.

Even as a young kid, I excelled at all things fitness-related. Outrunning all the boys in elementary school, doing the most pull ups in gym class, and endless energy for anything physical. I did gymnastics, dance and track all the way through high school. Those are definitely some of my best memories!
