Rising Stars: Meet Ruby Natividad Florendo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Natividad Florendo.

Hi Ruby, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My love for photography started when I was a little girl in the Philippines. I remember my family loved to collect coffee table books and one of my favorite titles is The Best of Life. I am a visual person and love to look at pictures. My favorite portrait photographers are Richard Avedon and Yousuf Karsh. I love how they photographed Actors and Actresses in the early times. I also love how they captured the classy and glamour style of Hollywood. Unconsciously, my fascination to photography was just a wild dream but later became a realization when I was on my forties to be specific.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was not a smooth road and a lot of struggles along the way especially dealing with the technical aspects of photography. It took me a while to figure out the basic technicalities but as soon as I progressed, I learned to break the rules, experimented and expanded on my creative style. I realized that the more I experimented on my subjects, it gave me more inspiration which flesh out my own personal style. The basic technical skills are the most important foundation in creating your own artistry.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Portrait Photographer. I started as a Landscape Photographer but eventually transitioned to Portrait Photography. I love being with people and I love representing them. I do believe that every individual person has a story to tell. And as a photographer, it is my responsibility to capture and portray them in their pictures. I believe what sets me apart from others is I practice equality and diversity including subjects from different social and ethnic backgrounds and different genders and sexual orientations.

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m a stay-at-home Mom and through photography, I was able to break from my daily routines and a gave me an opportunity to meet aspiring models, actresses, singers, dancers and local talents. That is why I encourage everybody to pursue your passion and the things you love doing most.
