Rising Stars: Meet Ngan Thieu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ngan Thieu.

Hi Ngan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My family came over to the US when I was four years old. My mom worked in a restaurant and then later started a home catering business. Ever since I can remember, she has been an amazing cook whether it was for our everyday meals or for big neighborhood gatherings. In high school, I asked her if she would teach me how to cook, to which she responded, “No, I don’t want to teach you because I don’t want you to grow up and be a cook – it is hard work and I want you to have a better life than I did.” As a teenager, I took it for what it was – shrugged and walked away.

After moving away for college and living on my own, I realized that even though my mom didn’t personally teach me, I learned so much through watching her and eating her food. I developed my own passion for cooking and showed love through the food I shared. I hosted small dinners and experimented with baked goods to gift to close friends and family. During the pandemic, I wanted a way to still be able to connect with everyone, thus I decided to open Nganstop Snackshop so that I can share my passion and spread a little love to the world.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Taking this back to what my mom had said to me in high school, [baking] as a profession is definitely hard work! I am the sole person behind Nganstop Snackshop and aside from the baking, there are a lot of other aspects that play into the business such as: packaging, marketing, and management. I make and design all my own labels, stage the product photography and manage our social media account as well as handle order requests and fulfillment. At times it can be overwhelming as I am juggling all this while still working a 9-5.

One of the biggest challenges that I had to overcome early-on was learning how to manage my time and understanding my limits. During our first scheduled group pick-up, I was rushing to complete all the pre-order requests but still decided to take in a last minute order on the morning of the pick-up date! Needless to say, that was a stressful ordeal which resulted in me not having enough time to properly communicate delivery instructions to our clients prior to leaving the house. The situation made for a hectic day, but I learned a valuable lesson and pick-ups have been smooth sailing ever since.

Although it can be stressful and some days the work seems never-ending, I am so thankful to be able to work on something I am passionate about! All the support from family, friends and the community has been amazing. I’ve learned so much from other small business owners and am excited to continue learning and creating!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Nganstop Snackshop specializes in homemade goods that are unique and flavorful! We take pride in ensuring that all our snacks are well-balanced and use quality ingredients. The snack shop stemmed from our Spicy Furikake Chex Mix that delivers a bold taste of sweet, salty, and spicy. The depth of flavoring makes this an addictive crunchy snack. The next staple on our menu is the Furikake Rice Krispie which is a truly unique savory sweet and chewy snack bar that provides great texture and one of a kind taste. We also offer limited flavorings which are developed with the same meticulous detail and the flavoring is equally as creative.

My dream is to be able to spread a little more love by sharing my snack with the world. In order to make this a reality, I have accounted for specific dietary needs! We are able to accommodate gluten-free and vegan options so that everyone can snack nganstop!

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I’m extremely thankful to all of my friends and family who have supported this dream of mine and those who encouraged me to start the snack shop in the first place! I’ve also met some wonderful people along the way – other small business owners who helped spread the word and give me advice. It has been incredible to be part of a community that help lift each other up. Special thanks to Beckii Leung who has been in my corner since the very beginning!
