Rising Stars: Meet Michelle Avelar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Avelar.

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Michelle Avelar, but many know me by my Instagram name Mikala Artistry. I always grew up knowing I had a passion for makeup and anything beauty. Cosmetology was my dream and something I wanted to do straight out of high school. I remember I was the go-to person to do makeup and hair for school dances and graduations. No experience, just practice. I saw a future doing this. Plus, it was my passion since a young age. This, however, wasn’t considered a career in my family. Being raised by a single Hispanic mom, plus being the first generation Salvadorian American, the pressure was on to choose a career wisely. I knew I needed to pursue a different career path. One that had security, Even though my heart always brought me back to beauty.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Spring of 2012, my mom became ill, I had to become her full-time caregiver and my little brother’s as well. College full-time was out of the question. We had to survive on my income and time, which gladly took that responsibility. One day I was looking at some ads on a magazine and came across a beauty school near my area, which offered a short-term six months program with evening classes. This worked perfectly with my job schedule. I made the call and took the plunge and haven’t looked back since. I dedicated six months to earn a certificate and going to class was my happy place. When I graduated Ruby Makeup Academy and placed 1st place in my fantasy makeup final. I felt like anything could truly be possible and you could pursue your passion as a career choice.

When I pick up that makeup brush, it’s as if I get lost in another world. Working with colors, shimmers and anything makeup is my happy place and element. I believe my passion for makeup transcends through my work. The feeling I get after glamming each client and seeing their reaction is truly rewarding. Getting to have the best of both worlds is simply the best.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With makeup, I have truly expanded my horizons, I don’t just stick to glam and beauty. But I also work with body paint, special fx, runway and editorial makeup. Where I do find most of my clients is with bridal and special occasion glam. I truly love being there for people’s special events. To see the faces of brides light up when they see their makeup done or a sweet 16 young lady shine on her special event. It’s truly rewarding.

One of my most memorable works was working with Italian singer/songwriter Cristina Lizzul. Covering her body in glitter, making a body suit. Working with blending colors to create an ombré effect, yes! All with glitter. To work on a runway for quick editorial makeup to special effects makeup. Makeup truly hits every Avenue. The best thing is there’s so much room to grow and expand.

I’m a freelance makeup artist, working on my own schedule and time. It took time to get my work out there, but with great connections and word of mouth. I notice my business booming. I’m grateful for those clients that have trusted me to be part of their great day or thought of me to work fun crazy ideas. I have dedicated an Instagram page just for my makeup clients.
