Rising Stars: Meet McAndress

Today we’d like to introduce you to McAndress.

Hi McAndress, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from a long line of Artists, Musicians and Writers in my family, growing up around Folk and Classic Rock music for most of my life. It was something I knew I loved and deeply appreciated from a young age, with idols including Selena (Quintanilla), Mariah Carey, and my mother, a classically trained Opera singer. My parents were full-time professional musicians — gigging, recording and teaching — so I got to experience a bit of their world, which certainly influenced me as a child.

In the 90s, my friends and I would record ourselves singing to the classics, like Somewhere Over the Rainbow, and I’d more or less mimic my mother’s technique to the best of my ability. Listening to those recordings today is awe-inspiring because I just didn’t sound my age and seemed to really understand more than your average nine year old. It surprises me to this day and is something I’m very proud of — though my pursuit of a career in music didn’t come until much later.

My husband (an amazing drummer who’s spent the better part of 2 decades mastering his craft) and I put together a band called Teravolt, which is a blend of Hard Rock and Groove Metal with Latin influence. In the process, I’ve come to realize more of my versatility and competence as an artist, being able to explore the roles of Vocal Producer and Lyricist in an unfamiliar genre. It’s been most rewarding to see our debut album, “Waking Up” come together, and we’re thrilled to release it on June 6th of this year.

In addition to Teravolt, I’ve released my first single, “Sail Away”, as a solo artist under my middle name, McAndress. It combines my love of 90’s Rhythm & Blues and Indie Folk with a Soft Rock and Soulful vibe. While my pursuit as a singer-songwriter has only just begun, you could say that music has always been a very present part of my life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As a band, we’ve certainly faced obstacles over the last couple of years, much like everyone through the pandemic, but each shift has brought us closer to our goals as musicians and as a family. There’s so much opportunity ahead, I truly believe that this is just the beginning of a magical journey and that it’s all happening exactly as intended. It’s about not getting in your own way and letting the music speak for itself.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Writing, especially in a poetic manner, arranging vocal melodies and harmonies I find to be most enjoyable. It allows me to tap into a unique energy, communicating through emotion without the task of piecing an entire song together. My strengths definitely lie within the bounds of melody and message, and I really appreciate that in listening to music as well. Few things are better than genuinely connecting with a song on a level of its own, where that song or that Artist just ‘gets you’ and you can feel vulnerable or you can feel strong or whatever sincere emotion you wish to feel. Lyrics and melody are a powerful way to reach someone.
