Rising Stars: Meet Maddam Bre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maddam Bre.

Hi Maddam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, I’m MaddamBre a bicoastal tattoo artist. I’m originally from Essex County, New Jersey with West Indian heritage. However, I spent some years Living in Hells Kitchen NY where I first started my journey of being a tattoo artist. Currently, I have 2 private studio locations in both NJ and Orange County CA.

My career started in 2019 at the age of 22. I was always fascinated with the art of tattooing and had just completed two of my very own sleeves from various artists. During my sessions, I grew more and more fond of the process and said this was something I want to do. That very day I had the thought, I purchased all the supplies and started my form of education.

Once I was comfortable, I tattooed my right leg and began tattooing friends and family. Fast forward to a year later when I began an apprenticeship to help expand my knowledge of the craft outside of what I already taught myself. At that point, I realized that the fundamentals are all someone can teach you, the rest is up to you as an artist. During my apprenticeship, I also became a piercer. The support from my clients and people who see the value in my work is something I can’t describe. Two years later, “Inked By Maddambre” has been able to reach many people from the west coast, east coast, and London. I’ve also had the pleasure of tattooing well-known music industry personnel. My style of art is minimal, with sticker/Nicknack style tattoos. I’ve been able to be an independent artist, and create a black-owned business run and founded by me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think the biggest challenge as an artist is thinking that you are not good enough or you are just being your biggest critic. Once you find your niche the groove becomes smooth. You have to work hard until you are seen and then keep working harder. Another challenge I had to face was deciding if I wanted to be in a shop or work for myself. After some thought, I decided to be an independent artist. This led to me doing my marketing, appointment booking, and figuring out how to keep a steady clientele.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist – I specialize in minimal/sticker/nicknack style tattoos. I am known for my clean lines and bold packing. I am most proud of the commitment that I made to this journey. I quit my 9-5 to be a tattoo artist full time and three years later, I am a stable, independent artist. I’m proud that I was able to find my calling when I did and took the leap of faith that got me to where I am today. There are many other talented tattoo artists but I believe what sets us apart is my attention to detail and tattoo placement.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I would have to say that although tattooing is what I am known for I am an artist. I enjoy doing pottery, painting, fashion, DIY, and interior design. I have had the pleasure of set designing many music tapes and doing hair, and makeup on set. I am releasing some merchandise this February, so keep an eye out. I am also a big writer and have written my first book this past year which will also be released soon.
