Rising Stars: Meet Likfrom87th

Today we’d like to introduce you to Likfrom87th.

Hi Likfrom87th, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started creating photographs during the summer of 2017. During this time, I was beginning to start my senior year for undergraduate school. Over the summer of 2017, I researched and learned everything that I needed to know about photography to get me started. Truthfully, I did it to express my feelings within a different spectrum. I’ve always been fascinated about art and how everybody’s story is different. Within the first month of starting, I decided to ditch my digital camera and use film as the medium that I’m using now. Film has taught the importance of being patient and also not jumping the gun on situations. Being impulsive has always been a problem for me and film has helped steer me in the direction of thinking before action.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it’s been an experience of getting everything from scratch. I refuse handouts within this profession. The main obstacle was actually getting people to respect my work. Down the line, I had to understand that I must respect my work first. After understanding that, opportunities started to become in fruition. Instagram is a dreadful place for this profession because of the impulse to compare your work to others. Observing others who are providing mediocre work and garner more than 30,000 likes makes you question your own creative ability. Once you identify your work and understand that it’s yours, you’ll be fine. Everything will come to you organically. I’m in a place now where I don’t have to prove anything to anybody. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a film photographer and creative director. However, I would just call myself an artist. I’m always learning different things within this creative realm. I don’t want to be known as just shooting film and being like every photographer. I want to be known as an artist that can be thrown into different situations and adapt. The medium that I only use is film and I experiment with it on different projects. For example, I use the medium of film to help me create my handmade projects of mixed-media.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
There’s nothing I dislike about the city. I love the camaraderie me and my friends have. We create everything from scratch and off feeling. The biggest thing for us is not forcing ourselves to create art. The creation has to align perfectly for execution. With that being said, me and my friends know how to take breaks and come back to what we were working on.
