Rising Stars: Meet Latoya Ledesma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Latoya Ledesma.

Hi Latoya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In my 20s and early 30s, I spent most of my time behind a desk with a career most people would be happy with at my age, instead I battled an internal struggle to make myself genuinely happy. As time passed, I became fatigued and bored in the corporate setting. To cope with the stress, I started baking on weekends and soon my little baking hobby grew into a passion that I could not ignore. I started to learn everything I could about baking and decorating and haven’t looked back. I have to say it’s the best decision I could have ever made.

After years of home baking, a pandemic and a cake decorating apprenticeship, I decided to start Lala Sweets’ and go back to school to become a pastry chef. I’m currently a student pursuing my degree in Baking and Pastry. My specialty is small batch 100% scratch homemade pies and custom cakes. As time passes and my ambitions for pastries grow, I see how blessed I am to have found something I’m so passionate about that fuels my artistic soul.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like everything, honing in on your craft is a process that takes time, dedication, and a few mistakes along the way. Luckily for me, I have a couple of great business mentors in the same industry who are always willing to help.

As Lala Sweets grows and demand increases, finding balance with my business and personal life has been challenging. But overall, the business growth that I’ve had over these last two years has been a blessing.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My specialty is a small batch, 100% scratch homemade pies. Last thanksgiving marked a great milestone, selling more than one hundred pies in a week’s time.

Another specialty we offer are our custom cakes. From small 4″ smash cakes to 3-tier wedding cakes, we have a cake to feed your need. What sets us apart from others is our attention to detail and a love for some flair and fresh florals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I’ve never been a lucky person throughout my personal life but that all changed when I started following my passion. The people, jobs and training I’ve learned along the way have been at the right time for the right reasons. With my business mentors, friends, and family’s support and lots of challenging work, I’ve been able to achieve much more than I could have ever imagined in such a brief time.
