Rising Stars: Meet Laqulia Shuntel (Shinn)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laqulia Shuntel (Shinn).

Hi Laqulia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For years I have had an entrepreneur spirit. There is nothing I have wanted more than to be my own boss. About ten years ago, I left my native community in Mississippi to come to Atlanta with nothing but a dream. I had dreams not only for me but for my three children who made the move with me. I knew the city had what I needed. For years I worked various jobs from factories to warehouses and more but I knew that was not my end. Soon as I got in the groove of being in Atlanta, I launched Celibacy Talks. This became a non-profit aimed to promote celibacy among young women. From this movement, I begin to venture into my first love: cosmetology. Before long, I was not only inspiring women to wait on the person God has for them, but I was also able to reach them through my love for the beauty industry. From there, I launched the Bomb Brows Brand. I became a professional esthetician with clients all over Atlanta and neighboring states. From there, I begin hosting classes, teaching other young women how to become their own boss in the beauty industry. Now I am the proud CEO of Wigtician and The Wigtician University where I not only specialize in professional wig making, but I also train women across the nation from New York to California on how to create professional wigs and other cosmetic needs. It is literally my joy to teach others and be my own boss all at the same time.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would not know what a smooth road was if you showed me! Absolutely not! As a single mom, that gift comes with its own struggles. I have strived so that my children will not have the struggles that I have. I ensure that they are in multiple extracurricular activities, and they receive gifts that they ask for, not what I can afford. There were multiple setbacks and days I almost gave up and said let me just get a job. Being a CEO, your day is not done at 5pm, and you can’t punch a clock and go home. Even when you are home there is more work to be done. As my vision grows, sometimes I am unsure of how I can make it all happen exactly but I know God has me. Aside from that, I keep in mind that I have to stay on my grind because my children are depending solely on me, so I have to do this if not for me for them. The biggest struggle that one can overcome is learning who your target audience is, and I have to break it to you all that it is not your family so stay focused and do the work!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, as a professional esthetician, I specialize in brows and the beautification of the skin and face. I also teach classes to women on how to also provide those services and become certified. As the Wigtician, I specialize in wig making, braiding, and other aspects of hairstyling. I also train women on wig making and entrepreneurship. I think I am most proud of the fact that I am sharing my gifts with others. I am able to help so many women advance in their talents and turn it into business. I also own Shuntel Co. It is a fashion design company based on my journey. What sets me apart is I am genuinely unafraid to share. I don’t care about competition or keeping up with people. My goal is to help people, and I know that if I do that I can build an empire behind me.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I watch some motivational YouTube videos, I read mostly cosmetology books and blogs. I feel like if you want to sit at the table with bosses, you need to take in positive material. I don’t engage in anything negative and I try to maintain positive energy.
