Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Walls.
Hi Kayla, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I got my start simply by following my mom around when she would have gatherings. She was always the neighborhood “go to” house where you could go to have fun or grab a hot meal. She was and still is the life and light of any party. Growing up, she was really sick and doctors had given her less than 40% of a chance to live, so with that knowledge she chose to live life to the fullest rather than soak in sadness over the situation.
To protect the rest of my family from freaking out, I was told to keep the information to myself and we were to act like everything was normal which lead to me needing to learn and function the way someone way above my age might. Her gatherings and events continued, and to the public eye her life remained the same the only thing that changed was in private I became the person cooking those hot meals people would pick up, or the person behind the drinks and party favors that kept the company lit. Those moments were bittersweet but I’m grateful for them now because it provided me with experience and skills you just can’t buy or learn in a book, which lead to my business KaylasKocktailz. I feel like I know how to market and target crowds of all ages and areas because of those life lessons. My business is meant to be more than just “dranks” but instead the foundation to a good time and an extension of myself into someone’s home.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The path of me personally has definitely not been a smooth road. I’ve faced watching my mother nearly die on more occasions than I’d like to remember due to her sickness, I’ve faced the evils of family who said and thought I’d never amount to anything, those people including my father. I’ve dealt with my Big Brother being murdered without a clue as to who or why. I’ve battled homelessness and depression that lead to suicide attempts and recently, I’ve come out about the sexual assaults I faced as a child and the health effects that comes with such a sick act. To be honest, my story is one for the books and I could continue to go on and on to the point people usually don’t believe me or my story. I don’t harbor any ill will towards those who may show disbelief in my story, instead all I can do is share my truth.
While I can’t pretend that I don’t wish life had given me a lighter load, the goal is to just see it as the bricks in which I continue to build my foundation upon. Now when it comes to my business life, it has been a smoother transition than expected with us already selling well over 1000 drinks in less than 4months time. However, the steadily increase of success definitely has not been accomplished without a lot of hard work and sleepless nights. I’m grateful to the people who immediately gravitated to my energy, saw my dream, believed in it and supported it. The reception to KaylasKocktailz makes me feel like I’m on the right pathway to that light at the end of the tunnel.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m actually known for being the Drill Team Coach for my former high school, in which I was the Drill Team Captain for quite some time before graduating. That too was a rough ride as my freshman year was the first official year of there being anything other than a cheer squad on campus. While the team has faced many adversities stemming from racism and discrimination, we’ve made the necessary impacts to prove we’re a force to be reckoned with from charitable events, celebrity games and events, to winning our fair share of trophies during competition. In school, the team was my safe haven and I work hard to ensure that safe haven remains intact for many more students to come. Those kids are my babies and anybody who knows me knows I’ll go to war for them. I’m extremely proud of what I’ve done with the team, I do it by myself for the most part but of course, I have the aid of my mother and I work nearly for free. They remind me everyday that God has a purpose for me and it truly keeps me going on the days I just want to stop. What sets me apart from others is honestly my heart and my endurance. A lot of people would crumble if they endured the things I have or atleast, it would’ve turned them cold a long time ago.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’d just like to one thank you all for even being interested in me and my story. Growing up a little “ghetto” girl from the Jungles I didn’t expect anyone to ever stop and want to dig deep and get to know me or my story. And for any reader who may be holding back their creativity, too scared to start that business or apply for that job, please know that you can be your biggest asset or your biggest hindrance. Get out there and do whatever you set your mind to, the pieces will fall into place when it’s time. Lastly, for anyone and that goes for man or woman never allow that feeling of loneliness consume you, the hate brings you down, or the shame turns you away from speaking your truth. Your life has a purpose, and I’m hella excited to see how you shine. P.S shout out to my mama Roni she’s alive, healthy, and helping me every step of the way! I love you miss lady!
