Rising Stars: Meet Justin Kauffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Justin Kauffman.

Hi Justin, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I got into photography/videography through a very strange route. In high school, I was playing in a men’s league soccer game and got illegally slide tackled from behind while I was taking a shot. I ended up blowing my knee and tearing my ACL, MCL, and Meniscus. It took me almost a year to rehab my knee and get back to 100%, so during that time I would hike the local mountain to take photos and film my buddies while they would ski. I quickly got obsessed with cameras and creating things. I went to college in Seattle for a year thinking I wanted to study pre-med, but quickly realized I was more passionate about business and digital content. I transferred back to Montana, went to school where I studied marketing and ran two production companies all while going to school full time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many roads, mine has had several ups and downs. There’s a lot of uncertainty in this field and things are unpredictable, but I’ve been able to travel the world and work with many different and incredible companies.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an outdoor adventure and travel photographer/cinematographer. I’m mostly known for taking photos of action sports athletes, including movement/action in my photos, and showcasing beautiful landscapes in my work. I’m really proud to be able to work with athletes and call them my friends. It’s really tough to shoot sports because you only get one take and no second chances and understanding this/being ready is what sets me apart.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Everything about growing up in Montana haha. I think this is what has helped me be able to do what I do for a living. We were always hiking, exploring, and trying to see new things/come up with fun ideas. Without this background, I would probably be content sitting at home and would not be inspired to see new things.
