Rising Stars: Meet Jennifer Larkins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Larkins.

Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started working in a hair salon when I was 16 as a receptionist. I put myself through art school studying graphic design while continuing to work in the salon, never thinking that I would one day become a stylist. Once I finished school, I felt a little bit of emptiness about sitting in front of a computer to create. Not sure about what I truly wanted my next steps to be, I became a salon manager and started learning the business side of the salon. As my knowledge grew, I began to realize that I had a passion for this business the entire time and just hadn’t put it all together. I knew I wanted and loved to work with people, I knew I wanted to create and I knew that making people feel good every day would in turn make me feel fulfilled. I left the salon I grew up in Los Angeles and went to hair school at the Paul Brown Institute in Oahu, Hawaii. When I finished, I returned to the same salon in Venice, CA now as a stylist. I then trained under one of my favorite humans in the entire world, Zac Jenkinson, I now have my own salon studio at Salon Republic and specialize in hair color and cutting.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It took me some time to really believe in myself and my work. Change was hard for me so I let myself get stuck for a while and therefore stopped myself from growing. But once I took the leap and stopped being afraid, I realized we can all have the life we dream of.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a hair color and cutting specialist. I think I’m most known for my balayage and natural, beachy, low maintenance lived in hair color. I also am a technical and visual hair cutter so in each haircut I do, I am really paying attention to how the hair falls, where the weight is, where the texture needs to be and how the hair frames the face. I’m also really good at nailing photos of inspiration that are brought in to me. I think the thing that sets me apart from others and the thing I’m most proud of is how I can make people feel throughout our time together. I am very in tune with people’s energy so I can almost feel what they need in that moment. Sometimes they need a laugh, sometimes a cry, sometimes someone to listen. Human touch and connection is one of the most healing things and making someone feel beautiful on top of that is an amazing added bonus which is why I love what I do.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I feel like I have been so blessed to come into contact with so many amazing people that have given me tons of support, not only in business but in life, that I may not have if I had gone down a different career path.
