Rising Stars: Meet Jason Garcia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Garcia.

Jason, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I found my passion for filmmaking and photography by accident. It all started in high school during my sophomore year. I was on the football team, and during the season, I got injured. I couldn’t play anymore and needed to get a new hobby, so I started looking into photography as I always thought it was interesting. I remember the moment I bought my first camera for Christmas in 2016; it was a Nikon D3300. This camera was the one that I used to start teaching myself about photography. I started going on road trips and would take photos whenever I got the chance. Later on, friends and family would ask me to take photos for them. One of my favorite things and the best way I got to enhance my skills was through automotive photography.

In 2018, I started getting interested in making videos and practiced by filming my high school’s rallies and football games. My passion for photography and filmmaking kept growing, so I wanted to learn as much as possible. By senior year I had some money saved up, and I used it to go from Fresno to Los Angeles two times a month. There I would work on sets for free to gain more experience about filmmaking. Once I graduated high school in 2019, I made a Film Reel and got a job at a media company in my hometown. I got to direct and camera operates commercials and documentaries. I was so thankful for that opportunity; however, in 2020 I wanted to make more creative projects and became a freelancer. There were a lot of ups and downs involved, especially since this was during a pandemic, but I did not give up and managed to keep on doing what I love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some challenges I went through were getting to LA and getting used to the big city.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a filmmaker. I specialize in filming commercials and social media Ads. I am most proud of a commercial I directed for Gymshark on professional boxer and friend Marc Castro. What sets me apart from others is that I love to do everything on set from director, director of photography, camera operator, or photographer; just being on set every time motivates to keep working.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
The best thing about Los Angeles is the creativity and diversity that allow to make dreams possible. What I like least about Los Angeles is the traffic.
