Rising Stars: Meet Janine Jarman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janine Jarman.

Hi Janine, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m owner of Hairroin salon in Los Angeles and more recently, the founder of CURL CULT, the modern protein perm and texture support system. I have been working on the formulas and perm innovation for the last five years all in part to an increase in my client’s desire to have great wash and go curls and texture. Traditional perms haven’t evolved much since the 80s so I decided it was time to do something about that. Working with a chemist and lab in Italy to create an all vegan and paraben free line that leaves hair shiny and healthy with less mess, less stink and steps of perms from the past. I also created retail products which can be purchased directly at, that support all-natural curls and textures as well as perms. I’m here to bring the perm back, but better than ever.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The mention of perm often leaves people with less than desirable memories of the past. So it has been a battle every step of the way. From getting a chemist to believe my vision for creating soft and healthy permanent texture, to securing backing and distributors, to taking a chance on my idea. And for clients to trust me enough to do it. I have fought hard and will continue to in hopes to help reshape the message we have around texture and curls, and the accessibility to have it in all salons

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Self-proclaimed perm queen, I specialize in perms and texture. Salon owner for the last 16 years in Los Angeles. Wife and mother of two. Currently, I’m most proud that I didn’t crumble in the last 2+ years of the pandemic. At the time, I had a salon in NY (six years) and LA (12 years) and were forced to close both for the lockdown. After closing and reopening and a very unknown future for both spaces, I decided to permanently close my NY location since I was based in Los Angeles. It was heartbreaking. But with all the newfound “time off” I dumped all my guts into CURL CULT. My perm project that I had secretly been working on for years. I pulled Lauren and Elvira in, who also worked at the salon and now had unwanted free time, and we built a deck, wrote and filmed education. Found my business partner Melissa and secured funding. We launched a new perm in a pandemic. That’s what I’m proud of, I chose to pivot and find hope wherever I aimed my energy.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’m a scrappy visionary. I pride myself on my personal relationships and my willingness to jump in and get dirty for my project or anyone else. I have big ideas and I’m great at getting others excited to make them happen. I also am well aware of what I am not great at and always seek out others to learn, connect and grow with.
