Rising Stars: Meet Irene Osuna

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irene Osuna.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a freelance makeup artist after graduating makeup artistry school in 2016. Between working odd jobs, nothing ever felt fulfilling. My favorite part of the makeup application was doing the brows and seeing how much it changed the whole look made me wanna pursue permanent cosmetics. After admiring multiple cosmetic tattoo artists on social media, I finally took the plunge and invested in my first training. I’ve now taken multiple courses for different techniques and currently specialize in Ombré Powder Brows, Nano machine Hairstrokes, and semi-permanent faux freckles. I currently work out of Feel Good Beauty Studios a beauty collective located here in my hometown Long Beach, CA. The most rewarding part of being in this industry is the connection and exchange with each client. Most people might think brows aren’t as important but with the right touch and application, it makes a huge difference. Most importantly, how it makes someone feel. Permanent makeup is meant to enhance the beauty that’s already there and that’s something real special.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The funny thing is I started right when lockdown was at its peak and I was working at a resale clothing store knowing I was not going to stay there. Navigating this new normal and having to go to my training and sitting 6ft apart from my classmates was not how envisioned my career starting out. The biggest challenge was getting people in my chair and having them trust me with so little experience. They always said to get family and friends as your first models but you’d be surprised how little support there is in the beginning which I completely understand now. Although, my eldest sister was my first model and has been supportive since the start.

I knew building your brand on Social media was going to play a big role in getting my name out there. It has been even more challenging with the ever-changing algorithms and settings. With people’s social distancing I knew word of mouth would be hard as well. I think a lot of times we forgot “Our brand” is more than just a color scheme for your social media page. It’s about who you are as a person and what you stand for. People like to be engaged with an actual real-life person who they can find qualities they can identify with. I think sticking to my true authentic self along the way and not letting anything stop me has helped so much. There also comes a mental obstacle of comparison and wanting to be like everyone else and just as busy. Everything always looks better on social media so it’s best to stay as real as it gets.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My main focuses are Ombre Powder brows, Nano Machine Hair strokes, and semi-permanent freckles. Ombré brows are more of a powdery makeup look that is 100% customizable if you want a softer or bolder brow. Nano brows are hyper-realistic machine hair strokes for a fluffy natural look. As for faux freckles they are done with a machine too and yes people are now getting them tattooed and they are for sure my favorite service to perform! The beauty of these services is they are meant to fade and can change as you grow and you don’t always have to get a trendy brow! A lot of times people mistaken permanent makeup for being too harsh. I take pride in being able to really communicate with my guests and really come to understanding what it is they are looking to get out of their service and how I can help. It’s never about the price tag that comes with it, I truly want each client who sits in my chair to leave confident in what was offered for them. I think that’s really important especially since being in the industry you see how “saturated” it can be and how you can basically be certified by anyone claiming to be legit. This isn’t a get rich quick industry I think a lot of people forget that… These are people’s faces and it takes dedication, understanding, and knowledge to be able to do so. I’m always learning new things as I get the privilege to do my services and that’s the beauty of it!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
