Rising Stars: Meet Ira Tarrell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ira Tarrell.

Hi Ira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
So originally, I’m from Omaha, Nebraska & now living in LA for 11 years. After graduating high school, I knew I was destined for more than what my small town of 200k population had to offer. I quickly became influenced by Fashion, Hair & The Art of Hollywood, but as a gay black man growing up in Nebraska, I was not allowed to express or even be myself until after I had left! As I entered my adulthood phase of life, I had experienced hate, homelessness, betrayal & heartbreak. So it took me a while to grew into who I really was. I grew up with a little sister (hiii Booooo) & a hard-working single mother who instilled into us what seemed like every day that “We Are All We Got”!! So as the man of the house, I knew it was my responsibility to be great & to make sure my girls would be alright in the end!! Now after graduation, I moved to MPLS Minnesota to kinda figure out life, my uncle Mitch (RIP) lived about an hour outside the city so I knew I would be okay with being so far from my momma!! In the three years I lived in Minneapolis, it really helped me develop some sense of independence. I had lived, laughed & finally fell in love again. When I met whom I thought would be the love of my life, I was in a bad place mentally & he helped pulled me out of that place that I never wanted to be in anymore, he was a native of Seattle & wanted to move back to be more involved with family.

So after a summer of long-distance communication, I decided to risk it all & moved all the way across the country with him, now while it was not ultimately the most calculated move I’d pulled this far, it did really transition me into being an adult! Now by this time, I was a MA for a Naturopathic Clinic on Capital Hill & no longer in love, but the journey of this model life I had wanted for myself & for me had started. After a couple of commercials and impromptu shoots under my belt, I had an opportunity to move to the city I had yearned for, I had dreamed about LOS ANGLES CALIFORNIA! To pursue a bigger scale of modeling. Now, as I’m wiggling thru life in LA lust was knocking at my door & had me throwing away all of what I had done, I had gave up all concepts of independency & allowed myself to be mentally manipulated again. I allowed yet another man who told me he loved me to walk all over me, & one day I woke up to me having to pack my things AGAIN & Go!! In a city I was completely foreign to, I was lonely again & I was heartbroken but most importantly, the sink or swim factor was really starting to set in, & I knew I couldn’t fail not now, & definitely not in the city of my dreams! So I went back to my roots. I went back to what I knew best The Food Service Industry!

Now while I was back home in the Midwest, I had picked up the niche for serving tables. I loved the fast money & the flexibility of life I had, so I thought here goes nothing. Now while homelessness & sleeping in hotels wasn’t anything new to me, I figured I might as well buckle down regain self-control & take back life into my own hands!! After a couple of years of getting back on track, I finally found what I knew at the time was my calling & that was being a hairstylist! Hair was something I had always been around & was intrigued by. I had an old friend who could slay a weave in 45 mins (which is unheard of) so I said to myself “Okay now, This is It! Cause we not about to be racking up all these Student loans” “you’re either gonna shit or get off the pot” lol So I then signed up to attend the Aveda Institute of Los Angles & having had what I felt was the best education I could have got I felt ready for life again I felt stronger than ever I felt like I had control again I Felt like I was a MAN & it felt good! Today I’m a Single Dog Dad To a seven y/o angel sent from heaven (love you selbs), a successful Stylist, CEO, Educator & Lover of life. Remembering Every Day To Never Give Up!!….. Guess you can say I decided to shit 😉

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, not at all; the road has been far from smooth! I’ve overcome poor family dynamics, homelessness, joblessness & major depression.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a hairstylist based in Santa Monica, known for my cutting skills, I love to cut & style hair, which I do a lot of celebrity gigs, photoshoots, commercials, even television. I’m most proud of myself for just never giving up even when I literally thought I could not go on, something just said keep going boy, my eye for details I think is what sets me apart from others, I’m a very good creative director for that reason too, my eye for things are pretty good 😌

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Omg, my mom would take me & my sister to Kansas City every summer to go to Worlds of Fun Theme Park. I felt nothing could ever be bad that weekend that we were out of town.

Ira has been a tremendous force in my life regarding my hair. As a black woman it is extremely difficult to find someone who can not only conduct my hair properly but also teach me on proper care. Not everyone should be in your hair. Ira energy and love for hair shines through his hands. Magical !!!! Everyone wants to be a stylist but very few actually focus on hair care and beyond the hair. I was not drinking a lot of water at one point in my life and ira noticed it threw observing my hair. He instantly told me to please drink more water and use tea tree products for sun care. I work out in the sun a lot which can also damage your hair. With his knowledge : I AM NOT THE BEST: but I’m getting better with time Thank you king and I am super proud of you.
