Rising Stars: Meet Hunter Gawne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hunter Gawne.

Hi Hunter, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always struggled in school because of my learning disabilities and couldn’t draw, paint, etc. well at all due to OCD. Needed an art credit and everyone told me don’t even try to get into photography class because it was an “upperclassman” class. Decided I wanted to push the limits and ended up getting in. Fell in love with it and my photo teacher and I became good friends. I couldn’t stop taking photos. My teacher brought it up with me one day in class that I should be a photographer for a living. I pretty much ran with that and never looked back.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has been the farthest from smooth. I’ve struggled with depression for most of my life and that has made it extremely hard to get through some days. I think like most artists, we find ourselves to be never content with how our work looks or feels. I think that can be very good because you continue to push yourself in your craft but also can be extremely tough because sometimes you feel like your aren’t progressing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in commercial, lifestyle, editorial photography. I also shoot a large amount of surf photos. I’m probably most proud of how far I’ve come. I’ve worked extremely hard and pushed myself and my limits. My friends and family have been the biggest blessing in my life. I wouldn’t even close to where I am without them. I believe My personality sets me apart from others.

What does success mean to you?
As a Christian, I don’t base success off of how many followers you have or how much money you make. Everything I do is for god’s kingdom. I want to contribute to that as much as I can. I want to be a light to others. Of course, money and followers are great but at the end of the day none of that stuff really matters… it just depends on your perspective really, are you look at it from a worldly perspective or a heavenly one. to me, if I’m genuinely happy and doing my best, then I am succeeding
