Rising Stars: Meet Grayson Kennedy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grayson Kennedy.

Hi Grayson, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan and decided to move here just a few months after graduating high school in 2019 to pursue an acting career. I spent the next half-year enrolled at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Sadly, the pandemic cut my school year short. Since then, I’ve been taking classes with Krater Studios and have worked on multiple festival pictures. Being an actor in the pandemic, especially one so fresh has been taxing, everyone is nipping for crumbs that hardly existed in the first place. Through this past year, I’ve faced adversity as a young artist that has helped me grow as an individual. You never know how much you need something until it’s taken away.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. I grew up very poor, with a single mother who was on full disability by the time I was a freshman in High School. I began working in restaurants at the age of thirteen just to scrap together money for a future I couldn’t perceive as real at the time. Once I got here, I realized the few hundred I had in my pocket was hardly grocery money and had to get right back to work. I haven’t had any laurels to rest on yet, I’m still climbing the trunk of the tree, but I can see the view of the top from Sunset Boulevard.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an actor. There’s nothing I’m known for yet, but keep your eyes open and you’ll see me soon. Just you wait.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck to me carries a different definition, one that has been introduced to me by a Denzel Washington quote where he claims “Luck is the skill of putting yourself in advantageous situations”, but I take it a step further and say “Luck is the skill of putting yourself in advantageous situations, and being ready for them”. To this definition, all I’ve ever had was luck. Whether good or bad, I’m not so sure. I’ve dedicated my life to being prepared for my situation, and I know when it comes, I’ll be the luckiest man on earth.
