Rising Stars: Meet Goodness Ihekweme

Today we’d like to introduce you to Goodness Ihekweme.

Hi Goodness, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, My name is Goodness Ihekweme and I am a fashion designer and creative director for my brand Gstyles. Gstyles all started when I was little, I always wanted to express myself through fashion. I wanted to stand out and be different than all my peers. I never knew that I could actually have a career in fashion until my professor saw how determined I loved fashion and pushed me to keep going. One night, I went home and forced myself to learn how to use the sewing machine and started experimenting with fabrics. I started making my own clothes and wore them to my high school and everyone started asking me where I got my clothes from and that’s where it all began. From that moment, I was asked to make other peoples’ clothes and more people trusted me to create their next designs. I opened my first ever fashion show when I was in 12th grade of all my handmade designs. That was a wonderful experience and I loved every moment of it.  At that point of my life, I knew that I wanted to keep creating and designing for women and Men. Since then, I started telling my story through the art of fashion while being a full-time student with my brand.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wish I could say it was a smooth road but honestly it was very bumpy. I was a full-time student and all I was surrounded by were people who wanted to become a doctor, lawyer and engineer and honestly none of that interests me. I truly loved fashion and I really wanted to make that my career. I had to go against what others were doing and find my own path. I had nights where I had to stay up and finish my projects and also stayed up and make clothes. I had a lot of sleepless nights but it didn’t bother me as much because It was what I truly wanted to do. Every time someone asked me what I wanted to be, I would always tell them that I wanted to be a fashion designer and they all looked at me crazy. Some did not accept my path but that did not stop me because I knew what God had instored for me.It was a lot of self-reassurance that I had to do in my journey.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the designer and creative director for my brand Gstyles. I specialize in Women and Men clothing. I make my customers feel beautiful and confident in their own body while standing out and being unique. I am most proud of how far I came, from my first designs till now. I have grown so much as a designer and every time my designs keep getting better and better. I get inspired daily and it reflects in my designs. What sets me apart from others is my creative eye, I just know what would look good together. What also sets me apart is my creative direction on how I want my vision to come to life and I mean all the way down to the location, models, photographer, colors and etc.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
I have learned so much on this journey but I will try to condense it to my top three things. First, I have learned to design for me and no one else. Sometimes as designers, we tend to design for others and make pieces that pleases others but that’s not the right way. I had to learn to design what I wanted and just let others gravitate to my designs. Second, I have learned to always remember why I started my journey because sometimes things might get a bit discouraging and understanding your why will keep you motivated. Third, I have learned to always trust God. I say this because when you have a passion for something you love, you don’t know where it will take you. I believe when I trust God everything perfectly is in place. I don’t worry, I trust that God will take me where I need to be.
