Rising Stars: Meet Gavanni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavanni.

Hi Gavanni, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making music about three or four years ago with a vision to reinvent modern afro music. With consistency, patience, and time, I’ve been able to be very intentional with my art, which has brought me this far with my music.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been as smooth as it seems to others; A lot of people see the progress that has accrued over time and tend to assume that it’s immediate, but it’s not so – practice makes perfect and people see the “perfect” but not the “practice”. From my first song till now, anybody can hear the very obvious growth in the way I perform my songs, the writing, the arrangement, all of it. In the beginning, one of the things I really struggled with was the ability to intentionally convey emotions in my recording performances, but now, with practice and time, it’s been a lot easier for me and even then, there’s still a long way to go.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself an artist in every sense of it. I enjoy creating art, being a part of it, and experiencing it. Although I draw, paint and involve myself in quite a few artistic endeavors, people recognize me first and foremost for my artistic talents in music. My ability to intentionally mix and merge both my African and American experiences into a unique musical blend gives me an edge especially in the American music market; as I am able to create a sound that is not so common here but still very relatable and enjoyable to anybody from any cultural background.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
While the music industry continues to evolve through technology, social media, trends, streaming services, and overall how music is presented and consumed by the general audience, I believe that the true essence of good music remains the same and thats what creates the foundation for what really stays and stands the test of time.
