Rising Stars: Meet French M

Today we’d like to introduce you to French M.

Hi French, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m a singer originally from the south. I always had a voice, but I never thought of music as a career. My parents were very traditional, they believed after high school, you attend college and then a good-paying, good benefit job, you worked hard got married and had kids the End. I didn’t really see life that way, lol.

I found my voice once I joined church, I met another artist name kii and Msaw who happened to be just as shy as me, we all started working on music outside of church, and this is where I experienced recording and also hearing myself for the first time. I then enrolled into a local acting trade school, where I met Mandi and Sharokee, these ladies forced me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to sing live, they would sign me up for karaoke without telling me (imagine my face when the announcer says “Next we have French singing so high by John legend” lmbo I could just die from the fear that arose ” but overall it forced me to do it, cause once my name was said there was no backing out! I then created a social media presence under the insta name @French_idgaf, I started taking shirtless pictures and build a huge social media presence in a fast past, I became consumed with likes and pictures and expectance while trying to hide my insecurities that I wasn’t pleased with my looks or my voice.

It eventually led me to writer’s block and avoiding singing all together! I deleted all my social media and began a self-love journey. During that time, I met Avehre (Gladys Knight Protege) he became a wonderful friend and taught me many things! He offered me to move to the west coast working for him and Gladys, so I packed up all belongings and moved to the Great City of Los Angeles. Once in Los Angeles, I met the Amazing Artist Lamar Lyons and Djon the Artist in which they help me reshape my voice find confidence and ultimately provided a safe place to record, they taught me things about my voice I didn’t know I was capable of and ultimately pushed me in the directions to start pursuing a career in the music industry. Since then, I’ve recorded over 20 amazing songs and steadily pumping them out! I’ve recently released my single “The Interlude” Featuring kii and working on a project currently.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been my biggest Challenge, standing in the way of myself, overthinking my sound, my creative process and downplaying my experience. Learning that I’m already different and living comfortably in that space and speaking from my own experience is ultimately what makes me, me!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
My biggest lesson in the past year has been learning to take time to relax and spending time loving on my loved ones, life is short and if we are always chasing a dream or material things, then we’re not loving or living or fulfilling our obligation to God and his call and purpose for us.
