Today we’d like to introduce you to Fortune 5Hundred.
Hi Fortune, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
For me, it all began with my own fitness journey which leads me to a sport I would learn to love “Boxing”. Boxing itself wasn’t new to me. My family came up with boxers and fighters in it from my grandfather’s, my father, uncles, all the way to the ladies. For me at first, I stayed away from it, I always wanted to find my own way with things and think outside of the box. While doing so I ended living a life that leads to me being overweight from drinking, partying and lots of other poor choices. One day I woke up just tired and over it, something had to change fast. The desire to change lead me to the gym. I started at a standard gym full of machines and weights. Bring in a gym is motivating in its self just the atmosphere… I began to go and just started by walking and running on the treadmill and doing a few things I remember from basic workouts. This ignited my fire to do more, I realized that I needed to get a trainer or learn how to train myself and my fitness journey took off. What started as me just wanting to learn to train myself ended with me gaining my certifications in fitness. Now I loved working out but I would find myself falling in and out of routines due to day to day life. I got myself down a few lbs but needed to find something else to keep me going. Then it hit me, I should try boxing. I always liked the sport and always wondered how I would have done. I owed it to myself to try. I searched out for a coach that trained one of my uncles that had went the furthest in boxing. My uncle was good and I wanted to be just as good or better. My search leads me to a local rec center where he was Coach Greg Coverson a local boxer from the greasiest error of boxing that came up with boxing legends such as Thomas “The Hitman” Herns, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler even Floyd Mayweather Sn.
Adding Boxing to my training took things to another level. It gave me a new kind of motivation. What started as just a weight loss mission turned into a new way. I turned professional in 2009 til now within 11 years. I’m currently 22-2 and I’m the founder and co-founder of JabsGym the locally owned Detroit Brand for boxing fitness build off my boxing and training career. My Training career allowed me to work part-time and maintain my training for fights. I started JabsGym along with my partner David Tessler in 2012 currently Jabs has two locations Birmingham and Detroit and has been compared to the top boxing franchise. This local Gym is on its way impacting its communities with the power of boxing fitness. Also taking off is a workout I’ve created called Boyo™️ Boyo™️- Boxing’s yoga, Boxing and Yoga are by far my favorite functional training methods. They both seem so different but are actually similar. They both are based off using your core, your body, your mind. In yoga, they use flows in boxing its combos. One teaches you to channel your energy while the other allows you to release it. The Boyo™️ Workout has people coming out of Covid with a punch. JabsGym-Birmingham has been identified as one of the first gyms in metro Detroit to adjust during Covid with our curbside boxing workouts which allowed people to workout during the pandemic. You can learn more about jabs and our programs @ birmingham.JabsGym.com IG – jabsgym_bham Jabsgym_Em @fortune5hun, Facebook JabsGym Birmingham.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Everything has its ups and downs. We’ve run into small issues that all businesses go threw but our community has supported us. The biggest struggle has been the Covid hit but with social media platforms and live streaming platforms. It’s has made a new way for us. Changing things is always a challenge but I think of it like working out sometimes change is good. Without change and struggles there’s no growth.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
