Rising Stars: Meet Dee Dee Stephens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Dee Stephens.

Hi Dee Dee, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m an actor, comedian and producer. My family immigrated from the Caribbean to San Jose, California where I was born and raised. I moved to Los Angeles to follow my dreams of becoming an actor. I got accepted to the masters in acting program at the University of Southern California (USC) which was an amazing program. Since graduating, I’ve worked on several projects both on stage and in front of the camera. I’ve also been led to be an arts educator for the next generation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The most challenging thing for me is trying to narrow my focus in order to break into the film industry. I want to act in every genre on every platform because I love art. I’ve had some success on stage but I’ve had some rude awakenings about how the on-camera industry works for a newcomer. I’m sure I’ll be able to do it all one day, but my challenge has been focusing on only a few areas to get started.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m proud of using my art for more than just entertainment. I have been using my art to discuss tough social issues of race, mental health, and women’s rights to name a few. My most recent work is Art For George Floyd; a Social Justice Series of Online Virtual Protests in response to the ongoing police brutality against black and brown bodies.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
