Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Tederick.
Hi Cristina, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in the costume department for Madam Secretary in New York City. While I was working there, I met a stylist and I started to assist. While assisting her, I realized that styling was the profession I wanted to pursue. Through assisting in styling, I have met amazing photographers, makeup artists, hairstylists, and set designers. I tried to take every job that came my way because I was so addicted to making connections and being able to show my creativity. I started with test shoots that led to paying jobs and real clients. Test shoots are a great way for stylists starting out to create their portfolio and show how creative they can be.
During the pandemic, I decided to move to LA. While it was tough at first, as it was for everyone at the time, I started to do the same thing I did in New York. I made connections, started doing some test shoots, and gaining clients. Every day in the fashion industry is a learning experience. It’s not all about the clothing, people forget that it’s a personal industry. You have to learn how to leave a lot at the door when you walk in and have a good optimistic attitude.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think I have met one person in the creative industry or really any industry that has had a smooth ride. Starting out in the fashion industry is rough on your mind and body. It takes a lot of perseverance to continue to grow in the industry. You may feel like you want to give up at times, as pay can be low and days can be long, but you have to see the bigger picture and push on. Seeing your work in magazines, or in music videos, or on a billboard makes it all worth it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in wardrobe styling. Within the past year, I have styled multiple music videos, editorials and worked on E-commerce jobs. Before the pandemic, I was traveling a lot for one of my clients and even went to Scotland. A couple of years ago, I was on a Snapchat x MTV series called “Clean Slate,” where I was able to help two amazing people change their style. One of the coolest publications my work has been in recently is Vogue Mexico.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite things from my childhood was sewing with my mom. When I was younger, my mom bought me a sewing machine because she knew how much I loved clothing. She would take me to the fabric store and I would pick out patterns and choose fabrics for each of the pieces I was making. When I would finish the item of clothing and try it on for the first time, the feeling of success and happiness was unlike any other.
