Rising Stars: Meet Chris and Kara Brouelette (3 Mile Radius)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Kara Brouelette (3 Mile Radius).

Chris and Kara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Kara: Chris and I actually met while I was in town working with a national touring show! We dated long distance for about a year, and we talked a lot about the idea of creating an acoustic duo once I relocated from New York to California after the tour closed.

Chris: Yeah, once we realized our shared musical passions would complement each other well, we put together a really fun and eclectic cross-section of songs we both love and hit the ground running!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Chris: Outside of the fact that we had to learn our entire catalogue from scratch –

Kara: Yeah, I hadn’t done any sort of gigs like this before…I had been primarily a theatre girl.

Chris: – and I was really, predominantly, a hard rock/heavy metal guitar player. So, it was a bit of a – I wouldn’t even call it a “challenge” – it just took us a while to start building our song list and decide what musical direction was best to take the duo.

Kara: I mean, as challenges go, COVID obviously hasn’t been the greatest help for anyone gigging, either! … seriously, though, this massive sudden pause we had to take has only helped us to shift gears and start to doing our weekly #juiceandjams livestream shows. Playing weekly has helped us keep our sanity, reach a larger base of people and further expand our rep, thanks to requests and suggestions from that community we’ve been able to build. While this last year has been particularly challenging, Chris and I both tend to be pretty optimistic people, so we find ways to make challenges fun.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Chris: That’s a big question…

Kara: Wellllll, Chris and I make up 3 Mile Radius, which is an acoustic duo. I sing and play U-Bass, and Chris plays guitar, kick drum (which he built out of a vintage suitcase!) and sings. We actually got each other the instruments we play in 3MR as wedding presents to each other! We play all over Southern California at wineries, restaurants and private events! I’d say we are a pretty versatile duo – our catalogue is large enough that we are equally at home in an upbeat, danceable space as we are somewhere more low-key. We try to play a wide range of genres, so there’s something for everybody.

Chris: We’re most proud, at this point, of maintaining our weekly livestreams since Covid lockdown –

Kara: #juiceandjams!

Chris: – because it hasn’t been just a creative outlet for us. We’ve also had lots of responses from people all over the world telling us how much they appreciate and love listening to our livestreams every week.

Kara: The fact that these livestreams have helped people through this “life in the upside down” is what I think music and entertainment is all about. What a gift to know that the thing that helps you through tough times is also helping others.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Chris: Other than the insane possibility that the two of us could even have found each other in the first place to be able to perform together, I think we will be looking for some real luck once we start focusing on writing some original music.

Kara: Oh, I’m excited about writing with you! You know… they say that “luck” is where hard work meets opportunity. I firmly believe that. When we started this duo, I had never been any sort of “booking agent” for a musical group. We have worked diligently to find the types of venues where we are lucky enough to be on regular rotation and to have established those relationships with those people. I am – we are, very grateful for that. Honestly, though, I think what’s more important than luck is to show up, be good at what you do, bring people joy, and be kind to those around you.
