Rising Stars: Meet Charisma Justis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Charisma Justis.

Hi Charisma, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
There were two things that inspired me to create my accessory boutique Love, Charisma – love and needs. I love looking stylish and always received compliments from friends, families and even strangers in passing on some piece of my ensemble that really said “Hey, I’m cute!”. Almost always, it was a purse, snazzy pair of earrings or that necklace that really made an outfit pop. These women (and men!) said they loved seeing accessories put together for that extra pop, literally transforming your look and style. Next came the need because with fashion, we have soooooo many choices! We would go to a major chain site or big warehouse looking for “earrings” and fall down a rabbit hole of searches only to end up a few tables and lamps. So I said how about creating a business that focused on bags such as clutches and accessories, that can come in a variety of materials, styles and designs. Most importantly, no matter how much your waist, hips or butt has deceived you, accessories ALWAYS fit. So that was it. I created my business which includes a mixture of handmade, custom clutch bags, jewelry as well as wholesale items. And so became Love, Charisma.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Phew, it’s been rough! There were times when I asked myself “why didn’t you join __________, the mlm jewelry company?” but that just isn’t my vision. While I’m a pretty solid DIY kind of person, establishing a business with all of the set-up particulars was pretty interesting and then starting out trying to figure out the supply, demand, marketing, product photography – I mean, I was a mess and lost so much money that first year. I feel like there is a book inside of me of how NOT to start a boutique business and did I mention the business set-up? I mean, wow. Who would have thought I would have been close to celebrating my first year in business (it was a struggle but I pushed on) but would be doing a name change? Oh yes… there’s a sneaky little thing called trademark. One cease and desist letter left me feeling defeated and ready to throw in the towel on all of the hard work and vision to grow the business. But nope, I didn’t give up and went through the tedious and painful process and went from _________ Charisma to Love, Charisma. A few other challenges had to do with the fierce competition in the accessory business and surprisingly, at a time when my dream of helping women experience the feeling of coming to a website for exactly what they wanted seemed to be crashing, the pandemic offered a surprising revival. It’s been an interesting journey for sure but in the words of P Diddy, “can’t stop, won’t stop”. I know, cheesy but hey…

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Professionally, I’m a paralegal in the automotive industry but I feel like talking about that isn’t really reflective of who I am. After having experienced one of the most traumatic things in my career (laid off in 2019), I realized the entrepreneurial spirit may have been opened up with the Love, Charisma boutique. I pretty much had an entire year to reconfigure my life and figure out what this next phase of adulthood would look like. I realized working until I was 65 was not the plan. At all. I mean, I’m okay with a career but I never want to return to the type of toxic, draining environment I’d dealt with for years just for a good paycheck and comforts. With that being said, let’s say I’m a business owner and consultant.

Currently, I am working on a business doing what I truly enjoy doing (behind fashion accessories, of course) – helping people get sh** done. My background includes demand letter writing, automobile lemon law, legal document preparation and most recently, financial health education. These are all of the things I’m known for – using my know-a-little-about-everything knowledge to help people get what they want and need. Oh, I’m also known for being quite crafty and creative. I’m a some-time vlogger offering hair (wig) tutorials, DIY’s around the house and my secret life as a dating blogger. Most proud of? I am one resourceful woman. I will find a way to get just about anything done. I think I’m pretty dope. 🙂

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising people may not know about me is that a lot of what I’ve done (design/creating bags and jewelry, painting, etc…) is self-taught. I can envision or look at something similar of what I want and after a few tries, can do it. I don’t know if it’s determination or stubbornness, but I will find a way.
