Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany & Nicole Hampton.
Hi Brittany & Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
ThunkyFit is a brand created by my sister and myself. We had been thinking about how weight and working out has literally been a lifelong journey. We realized also that most of the clothing we wear outside of “going out” attire was workout gear, So we said why the hell not sells our own workout gear.
About two years back, we were brainstorming names for our workout apparel line and came up with Thunky. Thick and Chunky. This is how we identify ourselves. And what better way of celebrating who you are then with something that you identify yourself with.
We both had been putting off the big step to start our business until the pandemic hit. I am a full-time high school teacher, which my sister is a full-time social worker. So our time before the pandemic was very limited outside of our work schedules. Fortunately, with the pandemic, we were all stuck at home. With that extra time, we went into creative mode. We started looking up what we wanted our logo to look like, what clothing would look flattering on some Thunky girls, and most importantly how we would truly start this apparel line to represent who we were.
Our workout apparel line caters to women from size Small-3X. Some of our items are up to a 5X. I always said I wouldn’t put anything on my line that I wouldn’t wear. I wear every piece of clothing we sell. We also have unisex which opens up our line to not on self-identifying women.
We plan to continue forward with our line and encourage you all to check it out. We are back working full time, but plan on dedicating some time to focus on the brand me know and love called ThunkyFit.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For months I had been reaching out on social media about people helping with buying items in bulk and the process with LLC, and at first I didn’t get much feedback, even after reaching out to people I personally knew who had their own business. I guess everyone don’t want to see everyone win. Nevertheless, I got a response from my high school friend, Miyoshi who set me up with someone to file all of the legal paperwork and make ThunkyFit an LLC. Once that was done everything else took a lot of research and dedication. Tons of trial and error with vendors in states and overseas. Once I found great vendors the rest is history. It has truly been smooth sailing.
I also had no idea about how to print on clothing, but a really good friend of mine Rena helped me with what products to purchase and even sent me clothing with my logo on it and videos on how to do it. I can truly say the experience I had at the beginning is nothing compared to the support I have received from my friends, family, and customers. The love has been everything!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am 1/2 of ThunkyFit Brittany. I attended California State University Los Angeles and obtained my Bachelors in Liberal Studies and Pan-African Studies. I took a year off and went back obtain my Master’s in Education. I am a high school English teacher. I have been working in education for over ten years but have been working as a full-time teacher in Compton for the past two years going on three. I absolutely love what I do. Being a teacher has been something I have always wanted to do, and changing the lives of my students brings me so much joy. They are my why’s!
My sister, other 1/2 of ThunkyFit is a social worker. Nicole went to California State University Long Beach and obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s in social work. She also has her ACSW and working on her LCSW. She has such a passion for helping people it radiates through everything she has done. She currently works in the IE area as well as doing medical social in the Los Angeles area. She is a very busy BOSS and that is why she usually takes a back seat to some of the work with ThunkyFit. I don’t mind it at all because my schedule is much more flexible.
What are your plans for the future?
I look forward to making ThunkyFit as big as it can be. Focusing on this has been so great and I truly have loved the experience I have had so far.
