Rising Stars: Meet Beoncia Dunn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beoncia Dunn.

Hi Beoncia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Post college, I started working retail & I would interview for corporate Marketing positions throughout my retail career. Could not find the right fit for me in the marketing industry. Eventually, my love for fashion & art became the most prominent thing on my mind. The same way it was when I was a toddler to my teenage years. I would sketch shoes that I wanted to design, hand sew outfits that I would re-create from thrifted pieces, paint on denim, collect my favorite fashion campaigns from my mom’s magazines, sketch & paint still art. Fast forward to post-college, I was still disappointed that I hadn’t found a corporate marketing job to utilize my Business Marketing degree. Once I started working at NORDSTROM & TOPMAN, I knew my life was shifting & every job that I was working was aligning me with my divine path to fashion & art as an Artist.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Tuh! I’m only 33 and I have already lived a lot of life. So many times my friends would stare at me in awe trying to figure why haven’t I given up just yet or choose another career. Especially some of my close friends that have watch me go through some hardships that should’ve broken me. So many things that could have happen to me… happened. From being raised by a single mother — to my father being murdered my senior of high school with no signs of justice — to my mother’s career being impacted by the recession — to living under poverty — to being homeless in NY — to not having any food, hot water, lights or heat for weeks. I chose to believe that these hardships were molding me… shaping me into the artist I am today. NO MATTER WHAT… I WAS DETERMINED TO FOLLOW MY DREAMS! I had been so low so I believed that there was nowhere else to go but UP! I press onward & upward for my family, for my tribe, for Me. I am a Rose that has bloomed out of Concrete.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an artist, my work has and will always be meant to uplift & to impact my people to continue to press forward. It is important that we continue to create art with the intention to uplift & inspire because some people may need the message from our work more than we do… whether they see our work in the same way that we intend for it to be perceived or if they view our work in a completely different way. I am but a vessel; I will continue to use my gifts to impact the world in Love & Light.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
It is imperative to Be Present! During the pandemic, I mourned so many deaths. I am an empath so I could feel the heaviness in the air. It felt like mourning my dad’s death all over again. Life got REAL when I lost friends that were my age. Some of them I didn’t even get to hug & spend time with before they transitioned from this realm. This Era gave me so much clarity. We must understand that we are all living to fulfill the assignments individually given to Us while we are on this Earth. When you become spiritually conscious of what actually matters in this life then, you will begin to see everything & everyone clearly with new eyes. It’ll help you on your journey of understanding your purpose for living.
