Rising Stars: Meet Babes at the Barre

Today we’d like to introduce you to Babes at the Barre, Kacee Tilly and Alona Kristol-Harper.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We met teaching barre about six years ago is San Clemente and quickly became best friends. That made our transition to roommates a lot more fun. Both of us teach barre and yoga full time and our schedules were scattered around South Orange County at different studios. When the Covid 19 pandemic hit all of those studios shut down. Some of our studios switched to virtual classes but with that change came a dramatic pay cut for both of us. Because of the lockdown, we saw a lot of our friends and coworkers start hosting free and donation-based Zoom classes but we wanted to do things differently. In search for a more stable income than donations and since we live together and were teaching virtual classes from our living room already we thought, “why don’t we do this for ourselves” and Babes at the Barre was born. With some help and a lot of trial and error, we were able to create a website and found a platform to host our classes. As restrictions eased up, we started hosting an outdoor in person class once a week as a fun way to build our babes community. It was a hit! With that momentum and the world slowly going back to normal, we started seeking out indoor studios spaces we could use to host more and more classes. We now host 8 in person classes a week as well as 6 live virtual classes that are recorded and saved to a content library that our members can access anytime.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth??? NO! Hahaha. Technology is fickle and can really be a challenge. We had plenty of dropped WiFi connections, frozen screens, sound cutting out, dogs running into the class and anything else you could think of. Slowly and we mean slowly over time we started to get better at troubleshooting and our classes started to run with fewer issues. The main struggle we faced technology aside was deciding if we should pursue this side hustle as our main hustle. Night after night, we discussed if we should quit our main studio to focus more fully on Babes at the Barre. We came to the conclusion that we could no longer promote coming to our classes at the other studio while also asking people to take a leap with us and try Babes. Finally at the end on 2020, we put in our notice at the studio to invest more of ourselves to this venture. While it’s not perfect and we still have a few side gigs to pay the bills, we are continuing to push ourselves to grow Babes at the Barre into what we want it to be our full-time hustle.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In the simplest terms, we teach barre, but really that means we are your motivators, cheerleaders, choreographers, DJs, therapists and friends. We specialize in creating a fun welcoming environment that people of all ages and fitness backgrounds can come to a class and have a good time. Our clients would say we are known for kicking their butts and cracking jokes while we do it. We both like to go to classes that have a lighthearted energy to them while still being a serious workout so that is what we try to do. The thing we are most proud of besides offering a good workout is the community we have built. Our clients are able to find friendship and camaraderie through our classes and there is nothing better than seeing women support and encourage each other.

What makes you happy?
To be honest, the support of our clients. They continue to show up and cheer us on. South Orange County is saturated with workout studios yet they choose us and their support is why we keep doing what we do. We are so lucky to love what we do.
