Rising Stars: Meet Ashley McGuire

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashley McGuire.

Hi Ashley, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always had an eye for finding beauty as well as a passion for helping others. I struggled with my skin when I was younger so I learned a lot about skincare & makeup from a young age. As a teenager, I loved doing my friend’s makeup whenever they had a special event, or even just to practice on their faces. It was always so fun and relaxing to me. I knew I wanted a job in the beauty industry but I was told over and over again I would never be able to turn it into a profitable career. I did what I thought was the right thing at the time and I enrolled in college after high school. So much emphasis was put on having a college degree at the time. Trades weren’t encouraged as strongly as they are now so my dreams seemed so far-fetched. College was a perfect place for me to practice doing makeup on other people’s faces. I would skip class to watch YouTube videos and tutorials by some of my favorite professional makeup artists. I was able to work on a broader range of skin types and skin tones and get more creative with my craft.

A few years after college, I was working a 9-5 job in marketing. I enjoyed the company I worked for but my heart wasn’t in it. I didn’t have any passion behind it. I was doing my friend’s makeup for her wedding one day and she said, “Why don’t you make this your job?” I didn’t have an answer or a reason why I couldn’t turn to makeup full-time. I had fears holding me back but fears are a part of any career change. I decided then I was going to move forward with following my dream and see where it led me. I enrolled in aesthetics school and everything fell into my lap from there. I assisted another makeup artist for a few years and it gave me the chance to see another side of running a makeup business. I worked my way up at a Forbes rated spa during aesthetics school. I started on the front desk and trained to have a position waiting for me as an esthetician when I graduated from school. I said yes to every opportunity that was put in front of me. For years I never turned down an extra shift or an extra client. I saw every extra hour put into this field as a way to get better and better.

I had built up a name and a small reputation for myself when I decided to branch off on my own. I started Snatched Beauty Bar in August of 2019. When I originally started the business, it was a mobile business for makeup & spray tans. I would bring all of my products and equipment to my clients all over New England. I realized very quickly I was going to be spending a lot of time on the road traveling between clients. It made sense to have a location where clients could come to me. I found a perfect little 400 square foot studio space in downtown Plymouth and opened our first location in January of 2020. I had gotten a little glimpse of what Snatched could turn into before I had to close my doors due to Covid. We closed March through June of 2020. I was so worried about how this industry would be impacted when I was able to open back up. Luckily I have the most amazing clients who filled my schedule for weeks when the restrictions were lifted. We continued to grow from there. I hired another aesthetician, then another makeup artist, and so on until we outgrew our first little home.

In July of 2021, we moved to our new 1,800 square foot studio. We now have a team of makeup artists and aestheticians who are so passionate about what they do. The vibe in Snatched is exactly what I always wanted, it’s so laid back, it’s so welcoming, it’s so fun to be there.

Since I began in this field, I’ve looked forward to going into work every day. Even the most stressful days at the studio are still so cheerful. I sincerely love my job. I love my clients. I love my employees. My goals for Snatched Beauty Bar have changed and evolved as we’ve grown and I’ve seen what this business is capable of. I’m so excited to see what the next few years bring for us.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think any road that involves working for yourself is smooth. There’s always small bumps in the road. My business cards say I’m the owner of Snatched Beauty Bar, but that job title encompasses so much. I’m the receptionist, social media manager, scheduling coordinator, cleaner as well as a lead aesthetician. I’m always trying to make sure things are in place, stocked, and ready for another busy week. I’m also a mom and wife. Prior to this interview, I spent the morning moving around my clients because one of my daughters is home sick from school. I think finding balance is a struggle for most working moms. It’s been a struggle for me to turn off the business side of my brain and just enjoy being home with my favorite people. One thing that’s really made it easier is realizing that none of it is that serious. If I take myself or my business too seriously, I struggle more than when I take a step back and realize at the end of the day, it’s just brow waxes and spray tans.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner & founder of Snatched Beauty Bar located in Plymouth, MA. I am a licensed aesthetician as well as a makeup artist. Snatched offers facials, waxing, spray tans, lash extensions & makeup services. The studio doesn’t have one service thats more popular than others, all of our services are very sought after. I would say I personally am best known for my bridal makeup services. I’m always taking different courses and classes trying to perfect my skill and it shows on my bride’s face. I love working with all of my brides to create their dream wedding day look.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
It doesn’t all happen in a day. When I first had a vision for my business, I wanted to execute it overnight. I wanted to rush order everything I needed and put it all together in a 24-hour window. But it doesn’t work that way. I slowly chipped away at it, project by project, new item by new item. After a year of doing this without realizing it, the studio looked even better than my original vision. It originally just grew itself and came to life better than I could have imagined or planned for. It’s easy to see where you want to be & try to get there asap, but there’s a lot of steps in between that can not be skipped.
