Rising Stars: Meet Amber Buchanan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Buchanan.

Hi Amber, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Cinematographer working in Los Angeles. I started my career in Austin, Texas, as a film student and freelancer in the film industry. After graduating, I made the move to Los Angeles to pursue work at a higher level. Since then, I’ve been working as a Camera Assistant and, more recently, have had the opportunity to work as a Director of Photography on multiple projects.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with any pursuit, there have been some struggles along the way. It’s hard for a female, and a member of the Latinx community, to establish themselves in this industry. There are times where I’m not taken seriously by productions because of my background. Along with that, being a young filmmaker has made it difficult to earn the respect of others in this business. However, I’ve never let that stop me or discourage me from working hard to pursue my dreams.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a Cinematographer, and I specialize in narrative filmmaking. I’m known for taking a head-on approach in my work, including research, prep and being heavily involved in every aspect of production. What I find special about my way of working is that I try to stay true and honest to myself and my background with every project I undertake. I find myself loving the artistic process: of starting with words on a page and bringing them to life in a visual format. I’m proud of being able to see this come to life. I started as a film student in Texas, and have forged my own career in Hollywood, and made it possible tell stories that mean so much to me when I didn’t believe that would ever happen when I began my journey.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
I’m open to collaboration with other artists and filmmakers. I love to tell stories and create content whilst bringing a creative vision to life. Others can collaborate with me, either by being in front of or behind the camera. Models, Actors, Directors, Camera Assistants and other crew members—they all have something to bring to the table that will be helpful to me and my art, and my hope is that it will also benefit them.
