Rising Stars: Meet Amanda Galvez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Galvez.

Amanda, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I work at Rose Lane Farms, LA’s only heirloom garden rose flower farm, located in North Hollywood. I have a background in farming and sustainability, as well as having done some freelance florals and set design in the past. When I found out about flower farms, I was immediately hooked, as it combined both things I adore: farming and flowers! I started working with Lynne, the owner, founder and lead grower of RLF, in 2019. Lynne has been operating the farm and the land for what will be 27 seasons in April 2022. At the farm, we cut for primarily LA floral designers but offer our signature bundle options to the public. We make bouquets and have collaborated with so many small LA businesses ranging from CSA (community-supported agriculture boxes) to selling in stores like Cookbook Market. We also have a u-pick and have previously held workshops, classes, and events of all kinds that are always really special. We have built up a strong community of so many lovely people. The farm is truly a sanctuary space- we’re all so grateful for it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When working alongside nature, there are so many possibilities that could “go wrong” and that are out of your control. That’s a big lesson to accept, but also the most beautiful part of it all. Slowing down and allowing the growing season to lead. Weather is our biggest challenge at the farm in terms of heat! We do not have any electricity, and everything is and has been down by hand for years. When Covid hit, we really didn’t know what to expect or what would happen. But what we did know was that our fields were filled with blooms, and nature wasn’t stopping for anything. We had one of our best season in 2020, being outside was key, and partnering with so many new projects really kept us going. It was extremely hard for designers, but we did the best we could to help them when they needed it. Bringing the beauty of flowers into the home, to a friend, or even for yourself seemed to be the best way to get through the year, and we were honored to be a part of that.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a working flower farm. We specialize in garden roses, being LA’s only. I think one of the biggest shocks to people is that everything is done by hand and we have a team of six people, several feral farm cats, lots of birds, and plenty of soil critters to help us. We are known for beautiful and unique blooms that have the most stunning scents. Our flowers are fresh, picked day of, and we go through the whole process of growing, harvesting, cleaning, and arranging all on site.
