Rising Stars: Meet Aja Levi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Levi.

Hi Aja, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve wanted to be an Interior Designer ever since I can remember. I started out as a teenager working for local designers in Toronto where I grew up, and doing consultations for anyone who was willing to hire me. While completing my degree in Interior Design, I worked for a well-known Toronto firm that did primarily corporate office design and learned so much there. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles at age 23 and worked at a boutique firm for close to five years before branching out on my own to start Aja Levi Design in 2018.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey to get here has been difficult and extremely rewarding. When I first came to LA, I didn’t know a single person besides my husband (then fiancee), so there were no contacts to rely on for potential jobs. I got very creative with how I approached Design firms and presented my work in a unique visual format to ensure I’d stand out to potential employers (and it worked). I was hired pretty quickly, and although I was able to find a position right away, I had to start at the bottom and for next-to-no pay to get my foot in the door. I was able to work my way up and eventually became the firm’s Design Director, responsible for their largest projects and overseeing all the other Designers at the company as well. When I started my own company, that came with its own set of struggles. I now had to make all new contacts and find clients willing to put their trust in an experienced Designer but one with a brand new company taking on all the roles for the first time. LA can be a tough place to start a business, but I was determined to succeed. It took me a few months to connect with the right people, but once I did, I was able to build lasting relationships with clients that I still work with today. Owning and growing a business brings new challenges every day, but I couldn’t be more thankful for the road that led me here.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do full-service Interior Design and specialize in new construction and large-scale remodels. The majority of my business is centered around working with various builders and developers across LA to design their properties. I also love to work with homeowners to design their homes as well. I feel really proud to be working on amazing projects and to be able to do what I love every day. I think what sets me apart is that I strive to make each project unique and I don’t often repeat designs that I’ve done in the past. I also love to learn as much as I can about my clients and the way they live so that I can guide them based on what they need and not just what they want. Each project and each client should feel unique and special. That being said, I do think I have a very minimalistic approach to design no matter what style I’m working in – less is always more!
